ragtop69gs Posted June 29, 2013 #1 Posted June 29, 2013 When I want to do a day ride I look at the map and try to figure out what is within a certain radius of my location, which can be time consuming. Has anyone found an on line mapping site where you can set your starting location, then have the program draw radius rings around your start point ? Say at 100, 150, 200 etc. miles.
M61A1MECH Posted June 29, 2013 #2 Posted June 29, 2013 I am not sure about one on line , but Microsoft Streets and Trips has three functions that will do someting like you want. 1. You can select your starting point and then go in and ask it to find near by places, in that query box you an set the radius for Streest and Trips to lok at and the result is a circular grid overlaid on the map. 2. You can ask Streets and Trip create a drive time zone that wil show where you can get to within a certian period of time. 3. In the tools bar options of Streets and Trips there is an option to draw a circle on the map, pick a start point and drag the circle out as you go it tells you the length of the radius of the circle. This is a program you have to purchase, but I think it was pretty cheap and is very useful, I use it all the time for trip planning.
dacheedah Posted June 29, 2013 #3 Posted June 29, 2013 I search for cool off the main path kind of places and then just stay off main roads. A lot of very cool Americana is on the old primary's that are now the secondary roads. Look for small towns and just ride there and look around, you will be surprised at what you find at the places you have been riding by.

I usually just follow the front wheel but the last time I ended up on a goat path that hadn't seen a goat for a while! I think I need to plan but.....
kantornado Posted June 29, 2013 #5 Posted June 29, 2013 Try this sight I use it all time for big and small road trips from 25 miles to 5000 mile road trips. KarlS Posted June 30, 2013 #6 Posted June 30, 2013 I use Microsoft streets and trips and it does what you are asking. Just like M61A1MECH said I don't believe you can do it on line you need to buy it. It does have a lot of great features for planing trips.
ragtop69gs Posted June 30, 2013 Author #7 Posted June 30, 2013 Thanks, I'll take a look at both options.
rbig1 Posted June 30, 2013 #8 Posted June 30, 2013 i bought a garman but it seams to only show fastest way and thats interstate so kind of a waste for what i wanted. or am i missing something. bought the life time updates with it.
Peder_y2k Posted June 30, 2013 #9 Posted June 30, 2013 I use google maps online. I first set my location on my regional map, then secondly select a destination, then click 'get directions' and a blue route line appears overlayed on the map, along with a sidebar giving route directions (not so useful to me) but also gives distance and driving time. More importantly, one can adjust the destination point, plus set intermediate points, and even manually re-route anywhere between the origin and destination by dragging the blue route line, and the blue route recalculates giving updated distance and times. I use this free system as my first 'go to' planning device. Rarely do I use anything else. I just haven't figured out how to perform a complete round trip, but can get close enough, maybe couple miles from my origin. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
Barrycuda Posted June 30, 2013 #10 Posted June 30, 2013 This may be off the path of what your asking, but there is a site called open road journey. You can scroll your state and see other riders and where they ride. You can modify it to your own liking and make your own adjustments. Just a thought...
steamer Posted June 30, 2013 #11 Posted June 30, 2013 Took a day ride today. Pointed the trike south, stopped at one of our favorite eatery for breakfast. After a great meal, we continued south until we hit PA. Ran the 220 south to the 6 east. Great scenery along rte 6. Picked up rte 11 north back to NY. Spent about 8 hours on the road. Most of our rides start with picking a direction and just riding. We have found many interesting places along the way. Not to mention the many hours of free therapy.

Check out the "Settings" option. There are choices available such as avoiding highways, toll roads, etc. Andy
