Freebird Posted June 26, 2013 #1 Posted June 26, 2013 I just changed how the forum marks posts that you have read and not read. We will try it for a while and see if you like it better. The difference is that it will no longer time out and mark threads as being read even if you haven't read them. If you logout or are away for an extended period of time, The posts you didn't get too will still show up as "unread". The downside is that it will now show all as "unread" until you mark them read. So it will appear screwed up for now but I THINK you will like it better once you get everything caught up. There is a time limit on unread posts. If you don't read them within 10 days, they will be marked as read. It assumes that if you haven't read them by then, you don't want to.
Cheesehead in flatland Posted June 26, 2013 #4 Posted June 26, 2013 How does one mark unread posts as read without actually reading every one? I've been using the active threads and liked the way that was working. Thanks!
Freebird Posted June 26, 2013 Author #5 Posted June 26, 2013 Yes, just click on "Quick Links" in the second menu bar at the top....for right side just beside "Log Out". From the drop down menu, click on "mark forums read".
Cheesehead in flatland Posted June 26, 2013 #6 Posted June 26, 2013 Perfect! Yes, just click on "Quick Links" in the second menu bar at the top....for right side just beside "Log Out". From the drop down menu, click on "mark forums read".
dingy Posted June 26, 2013 #7 Posted June 26, 2013 Perfect! This SUCKS. Not even marking threads that I post to as read, as well as any others. Gary
Eck Posted June 26, 2013 #8 Posted June 26, 2013 If time permits, I just might get around to reading this posting...............
MiCarl Posted June 26, 2013 #9 Posted June 26, 2013 This SUCKS. Not even marking threads that I post to as read, as well as any others. Gary I have to back Gary on this one. It's not marking them read when I read them and I don't see a way to mark an individual thread read. Wouldn't it be better the old way with the time until they are auto marked set way (infinitely?) long?
Eck Posted June 26, 2013 #10 Posted June 26, 2013 Well something is wrong already. I posted my above joking comment and when I was done the post was showing as read. I went into another posting, read that one and when I went to look for another post this post shows up as being unread? Same thing happened after I posted in the ride for Gunboat that Squidley posted. It showed as read, but now shows as unread? Just thought I would mention this and I will watch as I comment on a few more to see if they do the same.
Freebird Posted June 26, 2013 Author #12 Posted June 26, 2013 Those of you who don't like it, how are you using the forum. Are you selecting "New Posts" from the upper menu bar or using Today's Posts? New Posts seems to work best.
dingy Posted June 26, 2013 #13 Posted June 26, 2013 Those of you who don't like it, how are you using the forum. Are you selecting "New Posts" from the upper menu bar or using Today's Posts? New Posts seems to work best. Attached is screen shot of what comes up when I log in. Have never used New Posts or Todays Posts Gary
dingy Posted June 26, 2013 #15 Posted June 26, 2013 Attached is home page after posting to this thread. It still shows unread, with myself being last poster. Gary
Marcarl Posted June 26, 2013 #17 Posted June 26, 2013 Me no likey... That the age thing, go run around the block and then you'll feel younger! well in your case maybe just walk!
Black Owl Posted June 26, 2013 #18 Posted June 26, 2013 In the for what it's worth column.... I like the "old way" better.
spider Posted June 26, 2013 #19 Posted June 26, 2013 In the for what it's worth column.... I like the "old way" better. I second that!!
Cheesehead in flatland Posted June 26, 2013 #20 Posted June 26, 2013 I just opened this discussion, scrolled through both pages and it's still marked as unread. What am I doing wrong?
awsmsrv Posted June 26, 2013 #21 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) Another "FWIW" comment: I liked the way the old way worked because if I'd read a post & then click "New Posts", the post I just read shows up still, but not bold like the others I haven't read. If I wanted to go back to the post, it was easy. Now I have to hit "Todays Posts" to even see it again because it disappears from "New Posts" the way it is now. That being said, I could get used to the new way, which is really what it comes down to anyway. We are creatures of habit & this new way is not what we're used to, that's all. Another thing, when a post was read & not in bold it was a visual aid as to where you were in reference to other unread posts. Edited June 26, 2013 by awsmsrv
MiCarl Posted June 26, 2013 #22 Posted June 26, 2013 Like Gary, I just come in via the home page and start reading. I tried "New Posts" and it does remove read forum from the list. When I go back to "Home" the topic is still bold, like the unread posts.
Sylvester Posted June 26, 2013 #23 Posted June 26, 2013 I marked this post as read and all the posts are now in light print (meaning read).
kbran Posted June 26, 2013 #24 Posted June 26, 2013 I like it better. Seems to mark post as read better when todays post is selected. Not sure why it doesn't in the other formats. They are still read because if clicked on it will take you to the last post made, just not marked as read which is strange. It sure works better for those of us using tapatalk which when opened and then closed for whatever reason would mark everything as read.
Skid Posted June 26, 2013 #25 Posted June 26, 2013 I use the New Post link, but I vote for the old way.
