Before I put the engine in my bike that has the 02 Venture trans in it, I thought I would first try the V-Max rear that I have, which is off an older V-Max. I have run into a problem with my MKI driveshaft being too short. The coupling on the V-Max rear is recessed where the splines are and with the driveshaft I have, there would be very little, if any engagement.

Do I need an MKII driveshaft, which I know is a little longer, to make this work? I know there are guys out there that have a V-Max rear on their 1st gen, but I don't know if they are a MKI or MKII.

MKII drive shaft is about an inch longer.

 

MKI is top of picture, MKII is bottom.

 

I have had an MKI & an MKII swing arm on Tweety, and they are the same size. Difference is in final drive, I beleive.

It looks like the V-Max rearend I have has the same coupling that the MKII's have that has the machining for the seal. At least the MKII drive shafts should not be as rare as the MKI's since most of them are worn out from lack of grease on the splines.

Other than using Skydoc's shims, vmax final drive was direct bolt-on with my MKII. Must be difference between MKI and MKII final drive.

Not all MKII swing arms will fit the MKI suspension linkage. The 1986-1987 MKII swing arms ARE different from the 1988-1993 swing arms, due to redesigned suspension linkage starting in 1988. If you get a swing arm for a 1988-1993 model, the shock linkage from a 1988 or newer will also be needed. The attachment point of the suspension linkage is moved about 1.5" toward the rear in 1988.

Actually,rear end is from an FJR. Very similar, except shock bolt boss not drilled.

I did change linkage when I put MKII swing arm on, I used it due to MKII 320mm rotor & rear brake setup for a while.

 

So for the 86 all I need is the shim?

 

I am not convinced shim is needed. I have one of Earl's shims, but didn't need it in Tweety or the Hybrid. There are a number of tolerances due to manufacturing involved.

Mount the final drive to the swing arm, tightened up. Then see if the axle will fit through without forcing it. Rotate axle around to find sweet spot. If it fits nicely, no shim needed.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking also.

I got an MKII driveshaft off ebay last night for $19.99 and about $12 shipping. When I get everything together, I will try again.

I want just say, that blog talks only 1200 venture , in " France " the 1200 come in 1984 to 1988, only two versions " XVZT and XVZTD ". 1300 arrive in 1989. It' s the reason that you see on the blog some modifications on the 1200 that you don t have in américa , cause 1200 was stop in 1985.

 

In France no cruise control for the 1200 until 1988, it s appears in 1989 with 1300.

only one model of instrument panel ( whithout gears indicators )

The last year ( 1988 ) 1200 receive electric fork.

No version XVZ DN (1985) in france.
