Prairiehammer Posted June 16, 2013 #2 Posted June 16, 2013 the tach, said 6500.. how fast was I going? What gear were you in? What is the loaded tire diameter? Here is a site with a calculator. Try it out. http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_speed_rpm.htm
lsutley Posted June 16, 2013 #3 Posted June 16, 2013 If you were in the same gear, as when you were doing 40 mph, you would have been doing approximately 62 mph at 6500 rpm.
Prairiehammer Posted June 16, 2013 #5 Posted June 16, 2013 I was in 5th gear I would estimate your speed at about 114.2 mph assuming a 25"± loaded diameter rear tire.
Big Lou Posted June 16, 2013 Author #6 Posted June 16, 2013 Unloaded just me,, dunlop 401 ,,150-80/16 wouldnt do that with a passenger ever
jfoster Posted June 16, 2013 #7 Posted June 16, 2013 If you have a smart phone, they have free speedometer apps.
djh3 Posted June 17, 2013 #9 Posted June 17, 2013 Yea thers an app for that. LOL Also GPS will tell you. But I'm guessing you didnt have one at the time.

painterman67 Posted June 17, 2013 #11 Posted June 17, 2013 I was getting ready to say . At 40 mph on my 91 Im at about 4 grand on the tach. At 80 mph Im at somewhere between 5 and 5500 . So had to be over 100

Flyinfool Posted June 17, 2013 #15 Posted June 17, 2013 My 88 turns right around 4100 at 65 mph in 5th. Assuming that you were going at a common interstate speed limit of 65. Most trucks do real close to the speed limit. Then to go from 4100 to 6500 rpm is an increase of, 6500 ÷ 4100 = 1.58537, so 65 MPH X 1.58537 = 103.05 mph. Or as Yammer Dan would say, "Time to start thinking about shifting out of 3rd"
Prairiehammer Posted June 17, 2013 #16 Posted June 17, 2013 Here is a calculator specifically for motorcycles. http://woodsware.aciwebs.com/gears/ If you were running the stock tire (140/80-16): 6500 rpm in fifth gear equals 116.2 mph. If you were running a 150/80-16 tire: 6500 rpm in fifth gear equals 119.1 mph. If you were running a 150/90-16 tire: 6500 rpm in fifth gear equals 124.7 mph. In the OP you said 150/90-16. In a subsequent post you said 150/80-16. In any case, the tire diameter is less when the weight of the bike and rider is applied, thus my earlier comment about "loaded" tire diameter. However, unbelted bias ply tires do grow at high speed, so maybe the tire diameter is effectively the same as a static unloaded tire.
dingy Posted June 17, 2013 #17 Posted June 17, 2013 2....math question: the speedo never worked ,, i now have a 150\90-16 on the back,, on the interstate yesterday,, i was keeping with traffic at 40 to 4200 rpm.. wind picked up and I got into turbulance behind a truck -drowned radio- with noise ...so i goosed it picked up extra cylinder and after i got around truck the tach, said 6500.. how fast was I going????? when I did tranny it is all stock 1989 royale 1300 In 5th, 119.2 mph, assuming tire full diameter. Excel spread sheet attached set to your parameters. Gary
Big Lou Posted June 17, 2013 Author #18 Posted June 17, 2013 that is definetly fast enough for passing.. from the back of a truck to the front .. I was pacing him till radio started to drown from noise of wind and road
