alvald83 Posted June 15, 2013 #1 Posted June 15, 2013 While on my 2 week ride, out of know-where my speedo started to squeal. I've had to lube it in the past and this has usually cured it, but this time both odometers quite working. I did lube it but it is still not functioning. Is this repairable?
KIC Posted June 15, 2013 #2 Posted June 15, 2013 I'll let the experts chime in, but if you need any parts, I have an 84 dash off of one of my parts bikes that I can take some pieces out of if yours can be replaced.
bongobobny Posted June 15, 2013 #3 Posted June 15, 2013 Yup! a common problem. The odometer freezes up and quits working but the speedometer still works...
Pegasus1300 Posted June 15, 2013 #4 Posted June 15, 2013 The drive gear for the odometer is Delrin plastic while the driven gear is made of metal. Guess which one wears out first? Anyway the only way I have found to fix this problem is to replace the whole speedometer unit. I have tried to take apart a couple of heads but the gear is not available and after taking the head apart there was no way I could see to put it back together.
icebrrg3rd Posted June 17, 2013 #5 Posted June 17, 2013 ...I have tried to take apart ______ ...and after taking _____ apart there was no way I could see to put it back together. How come that seems to happen a lot to many of my projects?!? (Just fill in the blanks with whatever I'm trying to fix.) Alvald, if other offers of parts fall thru, I have a spare '83 dash, I don't know the condition of the speedo/odo, I could swap it out on my bike to test it out first. PM me if interested. -Andrew
