Everybody, I have a scam alert. I am selling my RSTD and it's on C.L. and cycle trader. Well this morning I get a text that asks if I still have it for sale. I replyed "yes I do". The next text was " Hi thanks for getting back to me, am ok with the price and the condition, i won't be able to come for the inspection due to the nature of my work.i would havelove to call in person but we have call restriction due to bad weather condition our satellite server has been down. i will be paying you through PayPal, pls get back to me with your PayPal details so i can proceed with the payment and contact."

Next I asked where was he/she located, what is your nameand I stated that if it was going to be pay pal I was going to ship at the buyers cost. This was the second time I asked for a name.

The reply was I have a private agent who will come for the pick up as soon as the funds has been transferred to your paypal account so all I need from you is your paypal email so i can pay in.

I told him then that he hadn't answered any of my questions so I asked them again and asked the "agent" name. I told him that until I was satisfied there was no deal. The agent would have to bring cash to a location of my chosing and I protect myself unless I he could meet those conditions then there was nothing left to discuss.

When I got to work today my co-worker that is selling his Honda Rune and ST1300 had the exact same text message.

Don't think anyone here is dumb enough to fall for this but pass it on!!!

That has always been a popular CL scam.

I now always put a disclaimer in all of my CL adds as part of my contact info, "Scammers, I know your games so don't bother" Most must read it and move to the next add, I get very few scam responses since I started this, I used to get many for every add.

It is of course a scam. When I have received that reply, I sent the following:

Me: Do you trust your shipper?

Scammer: Yes I do.

Me: Great. Have them bring the payment in cash.

Scammer:

....nothing but crickets.....

Well, probably I'm a little slow here, but if someone asked for your paypal account name, wouldn't they need it to transfer payment to you? Just asking.

They'll never send it, and say they did. Then they'll start yanking your chain and say they need to send a check. I actually got one to send me a check. Drawn on some bank..which doesn't exist. I think I still have it somewhere in the office. I wish there were some way we could send them a virus that eats their hard drive.... :whistling:

i sold several bikes via paypal on ebay. if the guy puts money in your paypal account it's as good as gold. if the money does'nt show up in paypal it's your call. sold a bike to a guy in california for 10 grand sight unseen and the money showed up in paypal. his dad came up from ar. and picked up the bike.

Unfortunately, money sowing up in your PP account is not as good as gold.

A popular scam on PP/eBay is to buy something, pay for it with PP, once the scum receives it, they immediately file a PP claim stating that the item is not as advertised, or defective or some other lame excuse, they tell PP that they just want their money back, so PP tells them to return the package, they send you back an empty box, or a box of rocks to get the weight right, just for the tracking info. as soon as PP sees that the tracking says delivered to you, PP then refunds their money from your account. If you have already removed the money from your account, they will take it from your credit card or bank account or where ever else they can find it. In a dispute PP is most likely to side with the buyer.

I never heard of this on a vehicle, but then I never looked for it either.

The ways and means of getting screwed ON, WITH and BY PayPal are both legend and lengthy.

I'd say you've been LUCKY, so far.

All you have to do is Google-search "can I get screwed using PayPal" to return a litany of anecdotal evidence suggesting/proving the answer is definitely "YES".

My daughter was selling "all the furnishings" from her one-bedroom apartment and got an "offer" from an out-of-country buyer saying they would send (via PayPal) the advertised cost, PLUS an overpayment of $800 which my daughter was supposed to pay the carrier in cash when they arrived at her door to pick up.

The whole thing stunk so I told her to use the common sense defense: Tell your buyer to give his trucker ALL the money.......in CASH......and to hand it to you when they come to pick up the furniture. Even THEN, check it for counterfeit!!!

Needless to say, that email conversation came to a screeching halt.

ANYone who agrees to buy ANYthing sight un-seen......HAS to be suspect. Bottom line!!

I posted a hitch rail hauler for dirt bikes yesterday. within 15 minutes I received a text saying he wanted to buy it. Next text was that he would pay $50.00 over any other offer. He would send a certified check. He would pay for shipping etc. Says he is back east. It's a $250.00 hauler. I wanted to blast him, but figured he had my cell # and I didn't want to start getting spammed in response.

It just was amazing how fast he contacted me over my Craigs List post.

Here are the texts... notice he uses the word "goods" instead of the item name...

How about this when I listed a Bike on Craigs list today I've gotten these every time I list something. List a leather motorcycle Jacket and you'll get a few dozen.

Is your goods still available for sale? Umm...this may just be weird but you come across as fascinating in your list. Wanna hang out every so often? I'm not a weirdo, just feeling lonesome. If you are interested, chat with me on my exclusive dating profile (it's like facebook for adults), zero cost to signup! My pics and my phone # are all on there. After you log on, Im going to mail you a private message so you'll know it's me. There are too many fakes on here so if you're real, call me and become acquaintances and maybe more? Anything you want! All right, I won't hassle you again! To assure you that I'm a real person, today's date is 6/11/2013.

I have sold a few thing on Craigslist. And I get that same message often. The simple way I have found to end it is. I told them to send cash with their agent when they come to pick it up. And Cash only. Trust me, you will never hear from them again… at least until you list it again. lol:fingers-crossed-emo

Cash will bring some surprises. I was selling a minivan on CL a while back. Lots of destitute moms with 30 kids needing a nearly free van and lots of scammers. Bring cash was the answer for the scammers. Well, one I was sure was a scammer shows up with a box full of 5's 10's & 20's --the full 800 bucks for my van. I asked why he would drive from Chicago for a cheap rusty minivan, I'm certain they have cheap vans there. He says none of the cheap rusty minivans in Chicago have standard transmissions.

:shock3:
