Wizard765 Posted June 10, 2013 #1 Posted June 10, 2013 So I've looked but I'm not finding this info. I want to convert my MKI over to a MKII headlight. Got the headlight and adjuster from Dano and he still has the donor bike. What else do I need to get from him to make this work? I believe he is missing the front chrome trim and the tabs that hold it on. Do I need that as well as the frame or basket or whatever you call it behind the headlight?
Venturous Randy Posted June 10, 2013 #2 Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) I converted my 83 to MKII many years ago and it was a great improvement. Unless you want to do some welding, you will need the frame area on the left side of the bike that holds the dash assembly in place. This is where the light adjuster mounts and it is different on an MKII. You will also need the metal strip under the headlight that holds the upper fairings together. This where the headlight sits in rubber grommets and pivots when adjusted. You will also need the frame that the dash mounts in as this where the top of the headlight mounts. As far as the trim, you will need the ring that goes around the headlight, but you can still use your MKI chrome trim and it works fine. There will be about a 1/4 inch gap below the trim, but it looks fine as it looks like a normal air vent. I just put some black tape under it so the white plastic of the headlight does not show. I personally liked this better than then MKII chrome piece, as to me, the MKII chrome piece is very big. I know all this sounds like a big job, but once you take off your upper fairings, you just unbolt the frames and replace them. You will have to undo all the relays hanging on the dash frame, but that is no big deal. Also, if you have never greased the bearing from the inside of the speedometer where the cable comes though, this is a good time to do it. The trick to this changeover is to have availability to the parts you will need from a donor bike. If you can get all the parts, you will be vary happy with the results. I will look a try to find a picture from the front of my bike. RandyA Edited June 10, 2013 by Venturous Randy

bongobobny Posted June 10, 2013 #5 Posted June 10, 2013 Wayne, you also need the front fairing frame from a MK2, and to do it proper the side fairing frames as well. You also need the metal bracket that connects the left and right fairing pieces together from a MK2. Unless you switch the wiring harness as well, the vacuum for the cruise has to be McGuiver'ed a bit... Venturous has it spot on!
Dano Posted June 10, 2013 #6 Posted June 10, 2013 Don't worry, be happy,,,,, I will be shipping the entire top frame mount up to Wayne...... Wanted to bring it with me up to Dons but couldn't get it to fit a 2nd Gen.....
Jayceesfolly Posted June 11, 2013 #7 Posted June 11, 2013 Wayne: I have the frame parts that you need. The part with the headlight adjuster and the relay frame. Plus some other frame parts. If Dano doesn't have what you need, let me know if you want any of the parts. Jim
Wizard765 Posted June 12, 2013 Author #8 Posted June 12, 2013 Jim: That might work better. You are close enough for me to come and get them..
pmelah Posted June 12, 2013 #9 Posted June 12, 2013 just do a write up with lots of pics please so even a dummy like me can do it
Wizard765 Posted June 12, 2013 Author #10 Posted June 12, 2013 just do a write up with lots of pics please so even a dummy like me can do it Once I have all the parts in hand I will document and photograph the procedure. I hope to be able to list things item by item. I've had the fairings off many times so the only really hard part is being sure I have everything before I start pulling it apart.
pmelah Posted June 12, 2013 #11 Posted June 12, 2013 thanks Wizzard it may be 4 to 6 months before i can start getting parts for mine but do look forward to seeing what you do to yours and how its done for us dummies :rotf:
