cabreco Posted June 8, 2013 #1 Posted June 8, 2013 As I have posted before my Gen 1 stinks of gas for a few hours after I park it. Nothing leaks, I have gone over with a fine tooth comb. QUESTION: Since I closed off the side opening in the plastics by plastic welding an ABS panel over the openings, COULD IT BE POSSIBLE that I am overheating the carbs thus causing them to stink after a ride? I would think not but I figure I would put it out there.
mbrood Posted June 8, 2013 #2 Posted June 8, 2013 That would basically be the same as the rest running with them closed and parking it the same way. I think you need to look for other sources. I had a "stink" that was pretty elusive, dusted some talc around the carbs and the bottom of the tank, fuel pump and filter. Turns out that I had seepage under one carb fuel bowl cover, not much but enough to smell. Pulled the carb stack, broke away the left from the right banks and pulled each screw, sure enough the offender had two loose, put some blue Loktite on 'em and tighterned it all and tossed the stack back on... sync was VERY close since none of the settings were affected that way.
Peder_y2k Posted June 8, 2013 #3 Posted June 8, 2013 (edited) Yes, very possible. Cover would retain heat as the heat rises from the engine upwards into the carbs and surrounding space. On my '88, I took the side covers off permanently to aid cooling. I live in a very temperate climate so high heat flowing out would be infrequent. Try parking your bike outside for an hour after riding before bringing inside. Thought occurred to me that a warm carb could be weaping fuel, and when cool, it may be sealed up. Also check the carb drain tubes for evidence of wetness. May be that the screw valve is not tight and produce a drop or two that evaporate. Weaping fuel may be very difficult to see, until it accumulates dirt. Here's where one could dust the carbs with talc as a test. The talc will darken when it comes in contact with a liquid, no matter how minimal. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 Edited June 8, 2013 by Peder_y2k spelling
cabreco Posted June 8, 2013 Author #4 Posted June 8, 2013 Mike, How long did the stink last? After I come home from a ride & she's good for the 1st 30 minutes. Then is stinks & I have to vent the garage every 15 minute for the next hour or so. After that she's fine.
cabreco Posted June 8, 2013 Author #5 Posted June 8, 2013 Pete, I was thinking the same thing. I think I will test this theory & take my next few rides WITHOUT the side covers on.
mbrood Posted June 8, 2013 #6 Posted June 8, 2013 Yep, since the moving air keeps things dry, I could park it and take my time and everything was OK. After an hour or two I could smell it. It never really got stronger but if I left it there about three days the stink was gone... but so was the fuel in that bowl I guess.

For example, I took her out for a 15 mile run & parked it in the garage. It was fine. 30 minutes later I go into the garage it stinks. I open the garage door & vent. I go in there 2 more times (evey 1/2 hour) and vent. Now she's bin in the garage a few hours with no smell and I can leave her there for days without starting her & she will not smell again. Wierd stuff.
tz89 Posted June 8, 2013 #8 Posted June 8, 2013 Do you park it on the center stand or side stand? In this theory something about the lean affects one or more float bowls full of gas. Maybe a gasket leak. Maybe a little gas flowing into the carb. Who knows. Try it the other way.

I used to park it on the side stand but along the same thought have been parking it on the centerstand for about 6 months now. Either way same effect & timeline.
Big Lou Posted June 9, 2013 #10 Posted June 9, 2013 I PUY A NEW FILTER ON MINE ,89, WHEN I SYNCHED THE carbs the other day i smelled gas for a while I put a white paper under it turned out the hose clamp that is the squeeze type wasnt all the way tight I could turn it with my finger thought I had done something to carbs I didnt wrapped electrical tape a little to tighten clamp and my smell is gone i park in the garage I DO LIKE THE TALC IDEA
