Gas Cap Question

I would like to get my gas cap powder coated to cut down on the reflection from the gas cap to my windshield. I know there are leather covers for this purpose, however, I like the idea of something more permanent. I need to remove the rubber gasket and when I look at the gas cap I notice two Phillips head screws, on the under side of the cap, and wonder if removing these screws would be disastrous or the way to get the gasket off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I looked into painting or power coating but ended up buying the gas cap cover from Yamaha. I had a piece of leather sewn onto it with a hole which loops around angled metal that the screw holding the plastic piece around the ignition switch screws into.

 

One thing to consider when painting or power coating the gas cap... the cover for the keyhole may not fit correctly afterwards or will scratch the area around the key hole.

 

I like the slip on cover because if I ever sell the bike the chrome is still there.

 

Did you test your gas cap to see if it is actually metal? Just a thought and I don't know a lot about powder coating... but if it is plastic will powder coating work?

Not sure about that but when they get loose and fall in your tank it is.

I'm not sure what the cap is made of but I lost my leather cover on the 401 one year and had a plan that involved a magnet and it wouldn't stick.

That's why I added a strap to it (about 4" long) that goes under neath the plastic ignition cover and is held in place by the bracket/cover/screw. I can't forget it or lose it !

those little tabs are spring loaded

If you carefully take the two screws out and lift bottom cover off you'll see how it works.

Just be careful and observant and you'll be fine

 

dont turn the chrome piece upside down unless your careful, as there are also little rubber pieces in the holes (like one way valve to let air in but keep gas in)

 

When you put back together use blue loctite on screws an it will keep the gas cap assembly from falling apart at highway speed...lol

Here is possibly a cheap solution that will keep the current gas cap intact and cost less than a 2$... I can not take credit as a VR member did this to his bike, and I did the same after seeing it, at B2Moms BBQ, all for the same reason, windshield glare.

Go to the dollar store or wherever, and get one of those beer Cousy things, the ones that hold the beer or soda cans and try to keep them cold. Then simply cut it down and place it over. It fits and it works. They have various colors. Just a thought...

I had the nicest one in the world!

I bought, used, the bib and gas cap set from Wally,, the actual one that is on Nancy's Ace High Leather. You know, the brown and black one.

 

Well, when I was in Springfield MO, someone at Hooters snatched it. Yep.

 

Anyhow, I stopped at some stores to come up with an idea,, maybe a small cinch bag,,, who knows?

 

But getting back on the road for a 950 mile ride I came up with it,,,,

I cut up a black crew sock, tied a knot, used a cable tie. And now it has a little crew cap! And if someone steals this one,,, I can make one JUST LIKE IT! (with the other)

 

Been on since October! Nice conversation piece. May take a picture! Haha

Yep learned from that experience....... it was just hovering there for a bit and was gone. New one has a tail attached.

Yup! I was going to suggest that as well! Punch out the bottom of a nice looking Coozie and it fits over your gas cap snugly. Holds your water bottle perfectly as well! Kudos to Boo who taught me that one!

I did see a guy one time had a furry ear muff piece put over his gas cap!

Maybe... but it didn't on mine and looked the same after 3 years.

 

I simply cleaned mine really good with paint thinner and then shot it with some high heat black rattle can paint.

 

You can also use a Dupli-Color product called Shadow Chrome (aka Black Chrome). The base color has a built in etching agent that will help with adhesion to chrome.

I have had the same glare problem. I had some carbon fiber mylar and put it on there. I thought it looked better than the cut off can koozy. Still was not what I was looking for.

My son a few months back was telling me of painting wheels on cars with this plasti dip stuff. Kind of a spray rubber pain. We use to years ago put a simular product on pliers and stuff but it was a dip on product. So I had gas cap off the other day and took itover. This is what I can up with. I use electrical tape and taped off around the side to leave some chrome around edge.

Spray Paint product called "Plasti Dip".. comes in various colours.. People paint their whole cars with it.. the more layers you put on, the easier it is to peel off when you want to peel it off.. Its quite durable and resilient.. and flat.. Work really well in this case, as evident in the photo you showed..

Perfect fit - never falls off, easy to remove and replace and there is even a drain hole that acts as a vent once you turn it upside down on the gas cap. And it didn't even cost me anything - I won it as a door prize!
