Huggy Posted May 31, 2013 #1 Posted May 31, 2013 OK I'm about to start cleaning the carbs. I have disassembled and taken pics of carbs so I can put them back together. I have cleaned carbs before, Hitachi, What do I need to know about cleaning these carbs. Once I have stripped the carb of all the parts can I soak the carb bodies in degreaser? Are there gaskets available for the internal parts that require them available? If it makes a difference there from a 1986 Venture Royale. Any input regarding cleaning these carbs would be appreciated. Oh yes the piston valves in the carbs are all gummed up what is the best way to clean them and the bore? Thanks.
dacheedah Posted May 31, 2013 #2 Posted May 31, 2013 very hot water and pinesol will clean the varnish out, soak overnight and rinse again with hot water. Use air or a circulating pump with hot water to clean the small passages. I wouldn't stick anything in them but use air to blow through passages.
Prairiehammer Posted May 31, 2013 #3 Posted May 31, 2013 Another safe de-greaser is "Simple Green" and hot water. Simple Green will cut the gasoline varnish, especially if combined with compressed air and a toothbrush. If your significant other has no objection, a double dose of dishwasher detergent in the dishwasher will do a presentable job of cleaning the disassembled carbs as well. Just make sure the small pieces are contained in a mesh bag or strainer.
Huggy Posted June 1, 2013 Author #4 Posted June 1, 2013 Now I would like to know what model number is the carb on the 1300. I'll need to know when I go see my local independent motorcycle parts guy. Thanks I'll try the Pinesol trick as we have a whole bunch. Well at least the wife does. Thanks guys.

Huggy Posted June 2, 2013 Author #6 Posted June 2, 2013 I thought you just got a whole lot of Citrosolve? Works wonders! I'm using it Marcarl. Just wondering about getting the heave oily grime off the carb before I do the disassembly and clean. Any way I sprayed them with carb cleaner and then disassembled and used the Citrosolve. Then cleared all the passages and jets sprayed with carb cleaner and blew out with air. Question for you Marcarl, where do you buy the gaskets? Is there someone who sells them at a better price than the dealers?
