paysaw Posted May 27, 2013 #2 Posted May 27, 2013 Change all the fluids. This includes brakes and clutch.Dont even start it until you have changed the oil and plugs .Pull off the wheels and check the pads.Pull the seat and check for everything.Check all your wiring.Animals like to chew wires. A new battery is in order.Your carbs will need help. Thats a start.
Snaggletooth Posted May 27, 2013 #3 Posted May 27, 2013 Good read to get you started. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1066 Being a barn find you can add mouse damage. Chewed wires, mouse nest in exhaust pipes, lil things they do when they find a parked bike. Lil demons. Add dry rot tires, rust in fuel tank, dead battey...... all the fun stuff.
Flyinfool Posted May 28, 2013 #4 Posted May 28, 2013 There is a good chance you will need to replace everything rubber. Especially the tires.
SARNA66 Posted May 28, 2013 Author #5 Posted May 28, 2013 Is there anyone on here I can send the carbs to ? to rework them Chris
Brown Angel Posted May 28, 2013 #6 Posted May 28, 2013 I don't know anyone but just curious how much did you get her for?
Guest Posted May 28, 2013 #7 Posted May 28, 2013 83-84's are notorious for losing second gear. Not sure how you would check for that with the bike not running though. Also carb diaphragms go bad. My 83 diaphragms were ripped when I opened the covers up. Replacement ones were thicker.
SARNA66 Posted May 28, 2013 Author #8 Posted May 28, 2013 I have alot of work ahead of me-Thanks for all your help. Tires, new oil, gaskets, change the fuse box,carbs,etc... lol hope it goes quick
Big Lou Posted May 28, 2013 #11 Posted May 28, 2013 After sitting that long good thing is to pull plugs an soak in marvel mistry oil or,my fav. Liquid wrench, frees the rings,so no scoring, rather smoke, or pparts,,spin motor, before starting,,without plugs
bongobobny Posted May 28, 2013 #12 Posted May 28, 2013 Yup! You have a lot of work cut out for you but trust us, once you get it running you will be glad! 47K is hardly broken in for these engines, many have made it over the 200000 mark. You will most likely need carb work, yes oil into the upper cylinder area to prevent breaking a ring, and flush ALL fluids, clutch, brake, cooling, etc. Definately flush your gas tank, drain the carb bowls, replace the fuel filter, etc. You might luck out and get it to fire up without doing much to the carbs, and if you do, add seafoam to the gas, it's a wonder worker.
SARNA66 Posted May 29, 2013 Author #13 Posted May 29, 2013 Does the engine oil lube my trans to? or will I be looking for somthing else,I dont remember. thanks Chris
