Cougar Posted June 7, 2013 Author #26 Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) This is part one , Just some photos of what's in the box. Chihuahua not included. Also there is a 27 page instruction sheet I almost can understand. with photos , 1/4 of it is removing the body and aux tank. Will see now if I can really install this with the body left on the Trike. It does look as if the body was off it would be easier. The box and content was wrapped very well with no damage to any parts. the box weighed 31 lbs. as you can see that was the left over wrap from all the parts 10* Stars for great shipping and protection of parts. Here we go !!! Sorry for some blurry photos. way to tired right now. The couple photos are of the large resister (red wires )box with them inside that will be mounted under the false fender , this helps slow the starter motor down a bit as at first it was way to fast. The Motor was reworked by Hannigan and it is a (edit) -- Compact Chevy Starter. 1.4 KW Edited June 8, 2013 by Cougar
Cougar Posted June 15, 2013 Author #27 Posted June 15, 2013 Well I must say this was an Adventure for sure. If your even thinking of getting tank from Larry I would recommend doing the reverse at the same time. I did do the whole thing with the body on the Trike. Took about 20 hours or so.. lots of bugs they need to fix and they will before the next kit comes out or is ready. I think when all is worked out with details one could do this in about 12 hours or so. Had to do things like enlarge holes in some metal parts. Hannigan forgot to send a couple parts, all was good they sent them out right away, I just have to button up the top false fender area and take it for a spin tomorrow, I have about 40 photos of the install with the body still on. And a YouTube of the parts working I will post soon. (wasn't all the way done yet) so with out the tires on and it having some drag its kind of noisy. but it works. I want to Thank Larry for sending me some much needed photo's so I could complete this project. as Hannigan I think will use some of mine and his now. there instructions still need work. Also, thanks to Jim for the support you gave me from Hannigan. Can't wait to be able to back out of the garage tomorrow :-) I will try and do some type of write up and I will just post all the photos tomorrow so there here. nothing in order right now. just what I had to go through. Jeff
leo3wheel Posted June 16, 2013 #28 Posted June 16, 2013 Nice job Jeff! Anxious to hear how you like it.
Carbon_One Posted June 16, 2013 #29 Posted June 16, 2013 Oh he'll like it. A lot in fact. LOL. Good job Jeff. Looking forward to your write up. Larry
ragtop69gs Posted June 16, 2013 #30 Posted June 16, 2013 Oh he'll like it. A lot in fact. LOL. Good job Jeff. Looking forward to your write up. Larry Larry likes his so much, I've caught him doing circles in reverse in his yard when I pulled up. He must of been having fun, he had a big grin happening.
Cougar Posted July 5, 2013 Author #33 Posted July 5, 2013 After a couple weeks of using the reverse, (Happy Camper) Hannigan decided to add these resistors and in return make the reverse motor run at 6 volts. (to slow for me) and the power range sucks. This is not good if there is much weight to the Trike IE: like a trailer or passenger . it just wants to bog down after 10 feet. and pulls a pretty good battery drain as well . After talking with Larry and Brad at tech at Hannigan , I have decided to remove the resistor pack all together. and WOW it rocks now. can back up all the way to work now. AT 12 VOLTS. Also in the place of the resistors under the false fender added a second battery and ran the POS to the starter from it and well as my top trunk aux 12 volt charging jack for accessory's. NOTE: this was my option ONLY and it is not necessary to do. It really charges well and works well in line with the reverse. I do have the HO Stator as well as the MosFet R/R I think that might help , but it is charging both battery's just fine. So bottom line using the resistors the battery voltage was dropping to around 8.5 volts. then having to charge back up. (took about 3 miles) If using them you should have the engine running. After removing them it only dropped to 10.0 volts. charged back up in a mile or so. Adding the second battery , only dropped to 11.5 volts and charged in a 1/2 mile to 14.4 volts. I was planning on doing a write up with the body on and I can post all my photos. but the instructions will tell you most. it was missing lots but have passed on the info to Hannigan, And they are up-dating the instructions. Some parts had the wrong hole sizes to them. that also should be fixed as well. I think adding the resistor pack was the hardest part of the install. You do need to use the opening where that pack would go to do this install with the body on . Thinking it just might be worth removing it as the time would be about the same for the install. there is one bolt near the left passenger foot rest that is another part of the install with the body on. I had to make a tool to remove that bolt if the body was off it would have been easier the skill level I think would be around a 7/8 and lots of tools. I think if you are planning on adding a aux tank this would be a great time to do the reverse. Larrys tank is not in the way of this mod at all. as well as the newer aux tanks from Hannigan. However the best time to add it would of course be on a new install. even if you are thinking of doing it do it at that point. For the past 5 years it really has not been a problem in moving the Trike around with out it as well. but it is really nice to have this option. you can do both if you want the exercise So far I am very impressed with having the reverse. been no issues with parking in funny crazy spots now. There is also a safety feature , the Trike must been in neutral to even activate it. I will provide any info or help I can if you should want to do this install in the future. UPDATE: Hannigan might be possibly removing the resistor pack all together. so in return your cost could be lower to purchase ? there looking into that as well. (Just my thought) KEY WORD .. might. I will also post most of my photo's here if you wish to look at them. Peace, Jeff
dacheedah Posted July 5, 2013 #34 Posted July 5, 2013 Jeff, we run marine battery isolators on all of our boats, charges both but won't allow one to discharge the other. So one starts and the others run accessories . . . A small set of cables or a battery switch will allow you to start from either. http://bluewatermarinesvc.com/html/bat_isolator.html
Carbon_One Posted July 5, 2013 #35 Posted July 5, 2013 My experiences thus far with the reverse matches Jeff's report above. After giving some thought to eliminating the resistor pack like Jeff did I decided to do a temporary bypass of the system to see for myself if I liked it or not. Folks I think its a keeper. The bike will move a lot more smartly now than it ever did before with the resistors engaged so you do need to pay attention when hitting the reverse switch. I find using just 1 or 2 short bursts gets the job done quite well. The trikes roll so easily it really doesn't take much anyhow once moving unless you're backing up on an incline. I'm only using the original battery and haven't had any problems with battery life but will keep an eye on the volt meter. I don't anticipate any problems in this matter either thou. Having the running boards on my trike does make it much more awkward pushing back the bike while mounted, or even having to push it out of a spot before mounting it,so having the reverse is a welcome feature. For me having the reverse is right up there with having an auxiliary gas tank on these trikes. Larry
Cougar Posted July 5, 2013 Author #36 Posted July 5, 2013 Kevin, I like that Isolator, I am looking into it Thanks.
Bones158 Posted December 20, 2014 #37 Posted December 20, 2014 Jeff, I just ordered the reverse and should be delivered next week. Did you do any u-tube videos or any install pic's. Thanks
Cougar Posted December 20, 2014 Author #38 Posted December 20, 2014 Rob, yes I have a bunch of pics on a drive somewhere LOL, now are you taking the body off or not? I think I am the only one that did it so far with the body on, (cuz I am crazy that way) :-) I am here to help you through it of you need me just call when you get stuck LOL , in the mean time remind me to look for the photos. however Jim will send you the instructions with pics in it and even some of my pics. I kind of guided him since I was the first outside/ not dealer to install this. the photos and instructions she be better now. anyways I am just a call away when your stuck and it will be 60% easier to remove the body. Good Luck ! Jeff
Bones158 Posted December 20, 2014 #39 Posted December 20, 2014 Yes , the body is coming off. I have a few other things I need to get done. One is check the differential fluid level as I'm still losing some from the vent line. Not all the time, only when I'm running it hard on twisties or running on the freeway. Jim said it might of been over filled from the factory. Just enough oil to run back on the exhaust mufflers. I praise you on your install with the body on. It must of been a pain in the rear. Thanks for any needed help. It should be delivered on Monday or Tuesday. I will keep you posted and take pic's too.
Bones158 Posted December 28, 2014 #40 Posted December 28, 2014 All finished. A little tough on the hands but all went well. Will install the body tomorrow and give her a test ride, weather considering. The only problem was with the trailer hitch. I had to modify one bracket. Also no instructions. John emailed me a half set and Jim's out in Cali for the holidays.
Cougar Posted December 28, 2014 Author #41 Posted December 28, 2014 I had to whack down quite a bit on my hitch as well. glad you got it all done ! you will love it.
