djh3 Posted May 22, 2013 #1 Posted May 22, 2013 Have sort of been entertaining the idea of a pair of these textile/mesh pants to ride on longer trips in. Alot of my longer trips are in 80-90 deg weather. How hot are these suckers? I have a Fieldsheer textile jacket that I'm pretty sure once its over about 60 is hanging in the garage in favor of the mesh Tourmaster. Are any of these pants designed to be worn without your jeans or regular pants under them? Just seems it would be awfull hot with a pair of nylon type materal pants over your jeans. Shoot sometimes the jeans are hot.
CaptainJoe Posted May 22, 2013 #2 Posted May 22, 2013 (edited) I've got a pair of the mesh pants (black) and they are hotter than blazes over 80.. even when just wearing swimming trunks under them. Black sucks in the heat... Going to get the reinforced knee motorcycle jeans, once i find the old post on here. Edited May 23, 2013 by CaptainJoe
Atoolnut Posted May 22, 2013 #3 Posted May 22, 2013 Just bought tour master venture air 3 layer...based on recommendation of gold wing friend who puts 20000 km a year..he wears shorts under...he has done ride through the hottest parts of the US wearing these....hope he's right
Snaggletooth Posted May 22, 2013 #4 Posted May 22, 2013 When I first started riding again with the Venture I ran across a new pair of Clover Hydros for a fraction of new cost so I grabbed them. One of the best gear purchases I've made. Cordura with mesh vents, a zip in thermal flannel liner and a zip in rain liner. High quality pads for the knees and the hips. Zippers and Velcro on the lower legs. Pretty much year round pants depending on the liners used. In the hottest months I wear long under armour only under them, but still, at 85 - 90 degrees, you still know they are black. Once the sun goes down they can be pretty comfortable. The knees vents help move a little air on the upper legs and I leave the lower leg zippers open to get a little air there. If you're looking for summer only gear I'd say go with the mesh ones that you can wear over under armour, street pants or shorts for more comfort in the heat and slip out of them into street gear.
Condor Posted May 22, 2013 #5 Posted May 22, 2013 I used to have a Fieldshear mesh jacket. Someone else is wearing it now... was in the trailer when it was stolen. Anyway I dehydrated like crazy riding in 100+ temps on the way back from Colorado in '07. I decided to keep the textile jacket on when coming back from Wyoming two years ago, and was very comfortable. It does have vents in the arms and back...kinda flow through..., but nothing like the flow through the mesh. I think with the jacket mesh and pants it might be overkill....
hillrider Posted May 23, 2013 #6 Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) Joe Rocket Phoenix 3. Silver. They're good at 80 degrees. Don't know about 90 yet. Gotta be better than jeans. Update - been using them exclusively this summer. Decided to wear blue jeans for a ride (4 hour) Sunday. With a high of 85 - Mistake, way hotter. In the future, may wear jeans to Walmart, but anything over 30 minutes gets the riding pants. Edited August 1, 2013 by hillrider
CaptainJoe Posted May 23, 2013 #7 Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) found em... supposedly, the gusset makes riding very comfortable. with kevlar: http://www.ridermagazine.com/gear/diamond-gusset-defender-motorcycle-jeans.htm/ without kevlar: http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-jeans/ (plus a lot of other jean/pant reviews on right) :mo money:Hey, ya can't take it with ya! aharbi Posted May 23, 2013 #8 Posted May 23, 2013 Jeans are too heavy, I wear a pair of lightweight Cargo or Tactical pants under them. With shorts the bug guts splatter thru onto your legs.
djh3 Posted May 23, 2013 Author #9 Posted May 23, 2013 I was thinking of something as "stand alone" no jeans or anything under them. Heavens knows last summer in Jul/Aug jeans were bad enough. Dont know if I'll make the jump to these or not. Looking for intel mostly. My Tourmaster jacket is pretty much all open mesh, except shoulders and elbow regin. So its pretty cool until high 80's. I think anything can get warm after that realisticly I guess.
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted May 23, 2013 #10 Posted May 23, 2013 I wear Joe Rocket pants year round.... yup at times they are hot. If you are riding they are ok with some good riding shorts under them.... in traffic on a hot day they are hot. I have a Joe Rocket Kevlar mesh jacket for summer and a M2R jacket for winter, rain gear if needed. Jeans are great to wear, but had the pleasure of seeing how well they protect you when you hit the ground wearing them ( my Big Bro did the testing on that not me) Even the Kevlar "dragin" jeans may or maynot have the padding you really want when you hit the ground. http://www.joerocket.com/catalog/index.cfm/237/130/Pants/Alter_Ego_Pant just me
Jayceesfolly Posted May 23, 2013 #11 Posted May 23, 2013 I have 4 pair of the Diamond Gusset jeans and I wear them all the time (ATGATT). They are pricey but as Kevin said....regular jeans only last about 2 seconds on asphalt. How much is your skin worth? I have not been unlucky enough to find out how good the DG jeans are, and I don't want to find out, but they are comfortable and not any hotter than regular jeans. IMHO, well worth the protection and peace of mind. They are very comfortable and have extra deep pockets and a watch pocket on the left side instead of the customary right side, plus a cell phone pocket w/velcro on the side of the leg for easy access when sitting on the bike. The sizing chart tells how to order and they fit me perfectly. They are true to size. After wearing them for an hour you forget that they are two layers of cloth and are very comfortable. I also have 2 pair of Draggin Jeans and they are the same construction as The Diamond Gusset. All of above comments also pertain to Draggin Jeans. Jim
CaptainJoe Posted May 23, 2013 #12 Posted May 23, 2013 These white Icons and reviews look interesting... http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14/67/908/35675/ITEM/Icon-Hooligan-2-Mesh-Overpants.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch My black mesh pants are Icon and I like them(just not over 80 degrees)
IronMike Posted August 1, 2013 #13 Posted August 1, 2013 Mesh works to keep you cool. But no so good as protection. The idea behind mesh is to be cool and have something to hold CE rated armor. Ideally. Last July was the warmest I have ever ridden in at length. Three weeks of southern touring. That's me on the Tail of the dragon in July in a tuxedo - actually its leather trousers and a white tux shirt both with mesh BonArmor under them. I was actually very comfortable. The white long sleeve shirt reflected the sun and the mesh bonarmor really cooled me. Although its no it CE rated. Then I moved into draggin jeans with kevlar over the bon armor and a textile jacket. That also worked. I have a kydex holster factory at my house. I formed some up to slip in the pockets of the bon armor and its better than CE rated if you ask me. Anyone can do this just order some kydex in large enough sheets. I get 4x8 for $75 cut to size toast it and form it right to your body using a towel and foil. Videos about working with kydex on YouTube. Is really easy. You can find many motorcycle uses for it. And you can re use it . But in short nothing beats bon armor s mesh suits for good protection in hot weather. At night is down right chilly. Any air that moves over it makes it fell like AC. And it fits under anything. Jeans suits rain gear whatever its the best money I have ever spent on gear. Plus it washes up in a sink and hung to dry its ready in the am for another ride.
RedRider Posted August 1, 2013 #14 Posted August 1, 2013 Here you go. Armor in all the right places. Can be worn as an overpant with shorts/underwear underneath. http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/closeouts/mesh_jackets_and_pants/first_gear/2011_mesh_tex_motorcycle_pants.html Be careful of dehydration. When taking long trips (multiday) I wear the non-mesh overpants. RR
ddoggma Posted August 1, 2013 #15 Posted August 1, 2013 I have mesh pants, They are good up til 85-90 Decent protection, Better than jeans and the mesh jacket I have is nice too. I think the white and silver stuff is cooler.
awsmsrv Posted August 1, 2013 #16 Posted August 1, 2013 Mesh works to keep you cool. But no so good as protection. Sorry, but, I beg to differ. I have a mesh jacket & overpants from Motoport that is made of kevlar (therefore, won't melt) with armor, too. Stronger than leather by far. Check them out here.
