Trader Posted May 21, 2013 #1 Posted May 21, 2013 Sigh! My computer used to give me a preview of pictures and documents in a window....or I could change the view to small icons or large icons which gave me a preview of pictures. now(since installing Windows 8...which I hate by the way) all I get it the file icon with a red exclamation point on it. Windows 8 with McAfee total protection.

Did you know that ASUS is now offering a small laptop with Ubuntu preloaded? This a good news...it puts Ubuntu out there in the marketplace, ready to run, and no Windows 'fee' added...no crapware, and no windows malware...ever. And OS upgrades are free! Amazon.com: ASUS X201E-DH01 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black): Computers & Accessories I believe Dell has been doing that for a few years now. Not sure if it was only on the PCs or both.

I had looked on the Dell website before, and couldnt find any recently...say in the last 6 months or so. I know there are a few other distros that come bundled, but had not seen one preloaded with Ubuntu on Amazon before now. I have bought a few laptops with Windows, and then deleted Windows, (or replaced the hard drive), then installed Ubuntu or Mint. Just glad that the options are out there.... I also remeber a few linux pc's sold by Dell years ago...I sure dont remember what version of Linux they offered...but this is Ubuntu...the world's third most popular desktop OS after Microsoft Windows and Mac OS...not counting tablets and phones, of course. In affluent countries like the USA, Canada, most of Europe, etc, the Microsoft and Apple OS's just dont see much competion. But in some poorer countries, its way more popular....for personal use as well as business. Not having to fork over a fee for the OS is a big part of this. You know all this of course....but just plugging it for anyone else that doesnt.
brd7666 Posted May 22, 2013 #13 Posted May 22, 2013 Did I tell you I really hate Windows 8? Windows 8 is the worst. I bought the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. What a mistake. As far as I'm concerned, I ruined a perfectly good computer.

In the meantime, why not try Ubuntu on that computer? http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop Edited May 23, 2013 by tx2sturgis

saddlebum Posted May 23, 2013 #20 Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) I bought a new Dell laptop that came with windows 8. I was very comfortable with XP and wish I had just bought a Blank laptop and loaded XP on it. :bang head: I swear there isn't a day goes by that This windows 8 doesn't infuriate me to no end. The worst is every time I attempt to save something such as a document or picture, I loose it and cannot find it back I JUST WANT TO THROW THE WHOLE DA*****D laptop under the next passing bus. I have resorted to using a USB sticks to save stuff as a result just so I know were to go to get it back. Is there any reason why software can not be made to be user friendly and idiot simple. Another thing that irritates me to no end is that todays software be it the phone or the computer just assumes it knows what you want, like tossing stuff onto sky drive or into the cloud (whatever that crap is) with out you being aware of it. Or syncing stuff you don't want synced. DID I MENTION I HATE WINDOWS 8 AAAARGHH.:bang head::bang head: Edited May 23, 2013 by saddlebum
SilvrT Posted May 23, 2013 #21 Posted May 23, 2013 DID I MENTION I HATE WINDOWS 8 AAAARGHH. As soon as I saw the Windows 8 interface, which resembles the Windows phone I knew I would not like it and for that reason, I haven't even attempted to check it out. I totally dislike the direction Microsoft is going with their operating system. Unfortunately I am going to have to deal with it within a year (by June 2014) as we will be upgrading all our desktops and servers around then.... which is my job ... AARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH :bang head: :bang head:
Guest tx2sturgis Posted May 23, 2013 #22 Posted May 23, 2013 Ok... instead of throwing a life preserver, I'll just throw these drowning guys a cork stopper and some duct tape. http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ http://www.startmenu8.com/index.html Windows is terribly flawed, but if you REALLY want or need to be using it, at least you know that others feel your pain, and come up with some solutions. Try at your own risk, I know of these products, but I dont run Windows myself.

The stardock app appears to include a 'Unified Search for Apps, Settings and Files'....maybe that will be worth the $5. http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/features.asp
Trader Posted May 24, 2013 Author #24 Posted May 24, 2013 One of the things that bugs me is it seems to freeze every once in awhile for10-15 sec. Then it either just picks up where it left off....or "recovers' the page....minus whatever search or posting I've typed out. 10-15 seconds seems like a LONG time sometimes!
