saddlebum Posted May 19, 2013 #1 Posted May 19, 2013 (edited) Has any one ever tried using these black hot melt glue sticks for ABS (not your regular glue stick) on our motorcycle plastic. http://www.glu-stix.com/shop/page/product_detail/Product/5c5f7517b30add4c70eb3cd776a69d91.html Edited May 20, 2013 by saddlebum
Chicago Posted May 19, 2013 #2 Posted May 19, 2013 I used ABS cement from the hardware store. Works, great! I used a small common screwdriver as an applicator.
Peder_y2k Posted May 19, 2013 #3 Posted May 19, 2013 I dunno how well the gluestix work on ABS, but I know that the paint would need removal before application. I just use the ABS glue from the hardware store. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88
stickhandle2 Posted May 20, 2013 #4 Posted May 20, 2013 For any repairs I have done to the bags or fairing on my 86, I used a combo of MEK and ABS plastic, it works great. If there is any patching to be done some fibreglass cloth soaked in the MEK ABS solution works like magic. This is a trick I learned from my old Apache camper for fixing cracks on it.
saddlebum Posted May 20, 2013 Author #5 Posted May 20, 2013 I have used all those too including plastex. It is just that I came across the black hot melt glue sticks for ABS (not your regular glue stick) and was wondering if anyone ever tried them.
dacheedah Posted May 20, 2013 #6 Posted May 20, 2013 In my mind it doesn't seem hot enough. That said I know what I have tried that has failed but have no experience with it.
Flyinfool Posted May 20, 2013 #7 Posted May 20, 2013 I have not tried it but it does sound interesting. I wonder if you could get a sample to try before having to drop the big bucks. It sure is pricey to try out. ABS is difficult to mechanically bond to. Almost all of the recommended adhesives chemically bond to the ABS by having a solvent that actually melts the 2 parts together making for a joint that is just as strong as the parent material.
sandman Posted May 31, 2013 #8 Posted May 31, 2013 Looking for a easier way to repair abs plastic cowls. This hot melt is pricey but I may be interested if you want to split a order. Melts@380degrees so it should bond abs good. abs is a thermo set plastic(heat sensitive). the black is for abs according to link you provided. Their guns are pricey also. but a good gun that can provide a continuous ribbon bead would be the answer. let me know saddlebum if you want to split a order. thanks sandy

However at this time I have no real need for it, as all my repairs are completed and I still have a good supply of plastex left over. On the other hand if I had an immediate use for it, I would gladly split an order with you but at this point even half the cost is a little more then I need to spend right now, when I do not have an immediate need for it (and hopefully won't for a long time to come). In any case thanks for thought.
