Flashesbuck Posted May 15, 2013 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2013 ok, hey there people. ill introduce myself, i may be the youngest one here at only 25. I just got an 84 venture Royal. I had to sell my last bike a few years ago, right after collage because times got tuff. It was a 1996 ZX6E, Ninja. loved that bike. Now that i have a stable job, and bought a house with a garage, i decided.... its time again. My uncle got this bike in a deal/trade. i made fun of him for almost a week for him getting the thing. I mean its HUGE and HEAVY. but look who's laughing now. I now own it. and to be honest its really growing on me! It was a good deal to me, i have around $800 cash in it. All the plastics are in good shape, have all the bags and it runs good. Still needs some work tho such as tires, head bearings (maybe?) and air ride needs to be worked on. Leaks like a siv. after reading on this forum a little, it settled some of my woes, such as it does crank slow, the air ride issues, and a few other items that are discussed in the tech section. Me and my girlfriend both fit on it! has plenty of power. now i just really want to make it a reliable bike. im getting use to the weight of this thing, and again, its really growing on me! Let me see if i can get some pics to show up. http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo171/9buckingham41/Venture%20pics/IMAG1183.jpg http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo171/9buckingham41/Venture%20pics/IMAG1180.jpg http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo171/9buckingham41/Venture%20pics/IMAG1174.jpg
Snaggletooth Posted May 16, 2013 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2013 And Howdy, Well glad to have you onboard. You found a great place to be. You have questions, we usullay can get you the right answer. Air ride problems, can fix most of them with a soldering pencil. Head bearing adjustment, we have the man that makes the tool for that. Tires? Oh yeah, we talk about tires. Save some time and search tires. Lots of comments on tires. If you get bored you can ask about oil. Can't find a part we can help point you in the right direction. You will not only find the bike addictive, but the bunch here is a bit entertaining also. But look around, ask questions and enjoy the ride. NOOOOOOO!!!!!! You MUST use an oil that specifically states on the label that it is for use on a motorcycle with a wet clutch. The reason for this is that some of the additives that are used in car oil WILL make your clutch slip. I run 10w40 like the owners manual calls for, as for brand, they all are good, some may be a little better. If we are going down the brand road, let me get some :icon_lurker: :icon_lurker: :icon_lurker: You are just a hop skip and a jump away, theres no excuse to not make it to Maintenance Day (MD) to meet some of us "normal" folks. QUOTE] Plain old dino oil works just fine. Just maintain a regular schedule in doing changes. I do mine every 3,000 miles. Like said, you do to need to make sure that any oil you use is not loaded with those slippery additives. You'll think your clutch went south if you use them. I run 15/40 in the cooler and cold months then go the 20/50 when the heat rolls in. From the looks of the last couple of days, I better stock up on 20/50. Monty Posted May 16, 2013 Share #13 Posted May 16, 2013 I use Rotella 15w40. Works great. You can usually find your filter at the auto parts store too.

Jayceesfolly Posted May 16, 2013 Share #15 Posted May 16, 2013 Okay, Monty, now you did it!!! Brand names for oil!!!! :icon_lurker::icon_lurker: My normal self (that's ME) says that we use Rotella also. But Myself said I shouldn't start another one of those oil threads. DUH!!! Just make sure that the oil you choose does not have any additives in it that will affect the clutch and is the right viscosity. Jim (and the "other two"!) Snaggletooth Posted May 16, 2013 Share #18 Posted May 16, 2013 Of all the products you can buy Seafoam is one of the few that make claims of outstanding results and actually lives up to them. It's no miracle cure, but it does more than many other products. One of the best out there to break down the gunk and fuel varnish that cause so many carb poblems. A lot of us have had great results with bikes that have not run in years to get the carbs working again. A regular small dose every few tanks helps keep the system clean. Many use it with a full tank of gas over winter storgage to know it will fire up in the spring. Bikes, car, lawn mowers, or boats, it's a product to have on hand. They also produce a product called Deep Creep. A penatrating oil. Worth looking into. Yeah, you'll see a lot of the guys talking about the stuff. It works. Don't ya think Yammer? timgray Posted May 17, 2013 Share #22 Posted May 17, 2013 I use Rotella 15w40. Works great. You can usually find your filter at the auto parts store too. This. do NOT use "plain old dino oil" If it has the starburst on it with "energy saving" on the label, then you get to buy a new clutch because the additives will soak in and it will slip forever and ever. Use either motorcycle oil or Rotella. Do not believe any of the guys that claim they run any old oil in their bike. You CAN use any old dino that does not have "energy saving" and is at least 15W40. But you will also start wearing out your valve shims and cams. If you do not get a oil that has high Zinc content the valvetrain will start wearing faster. (I own classic cars with flat tappets, they suffer from this as well) The Rotella has a lot but the EPA is trying to force them to lower it. I am starting to run with an ounce of GM EOS ZDDP additive in every car or 1/2 oz in every bike I own that is older than 1995 at every oil change. http://www.zddplus.com/ - this stuff you can use 1/4 an ounce in the bike $10 a 4 oz bottle and will last you a few years if you are a normal rider. You are riding an antique classic, Motor Oil today is not designed for your bike. you do need to be picky about what you run if you want to keep the bike forever. Rock Auto has the oil filters for a lot cheaper and they come with the o Rings you are supposed to replace at every change. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,25496,parttype,5340 just buy 5 of them and keep them in the garage. Flashesbuck Posted May 23, 2013 Author Share #23 Posted May 23, 2013 hey guys a quick question here, i didn't want to start a new thread. I have been searching the form and cant really find what springs i need for the front forks. Is any "progressive spring" ok i was going to just get these from eBay, but if they are not any stiffer than the stock ones then its a waist of money. my class computer is shot, and need would like to eliminate the system really. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Progressive-Fork-Springs-Pair-1983-93-Yamaha-Venture-Royale-Std-11-1112-/170791610002?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27c3f92692&vxp=mtr Thanks guys,
Yammer Dan Posted May 23, 2013 Share #24 Posted May 23, 2013 Use The Sea-Foam to keep fuel system good. Castrol 20/50 oil. Been using it for 50 yrs no oil related problems. When I get old and slow I'm gonna get me one of them 2nd Gens. But normal is a setting on a dryer. I'm Extra Fluffy!!! Progressive springs are the way to go. No air needed in front. Shrader(spelling) valves can be used for the air ride or repair it.
Trader Posted May 23, 2013 Share #25 Posted May 23, 2013 When you say the Class is shot...what exactly do you mean. If you are getting E4 error it is an easy fix. I've never soldered anything but 2 wires together...but I managed to fix my class with the help from this bunch. Don't be too quick to write it off. Tell us the symptoms....maybe it's not completely shot! There is a member on the site...SKYDOC 17 who sells a lot of stuff we need (like progressives). check his ads. Highly recommend him because he makes himself available to help with what he sells! http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3768&title=first-gen1983-1993-progressive-fork-springs-21&cat=
