Rear Chrome fender tip

Has anyone had any bad experience with the plastic chrome fender tips? I'm not sure if I want to do all the work to bolt the metal one to the rear fender when I can just stick a plastic tip on. Will they last? My brother-in-law has a metal tip bubbled and pitted so I know they aren't perfect and removing everything necessary on the rear end doesn't thrill me.
