Peder_y2k Posted May 12, 2013 #1 Posted May 12, 2013 (edited) Considering swapping out the std 60/55W bulb for one rated at 67/60W for additional lighting power. Would this bulb generate excess heat that damages the plastic of the headlight assembly in my classic old '88VR? It would be the PHILIPS 9003/HB2/H4 VP. OR, is there a better bulb I should consider? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 Edited May 12, 2013 by Peder_y2k spelling...again...bad computer
abusive throttle cranker Posted May 12, 2013 #2 Posted May 12, 2013 There is something called IHD or something. I haven't really researched it yet but it seems to be a newer technology. Some of the people here have it and like it. I'm sure one will be along to sing its praises. Higher output with lower power consumption. Lower temperatures? I'm not sure about that.
mother Posted May 12, 2013 #3 Posted May 12, 2013 HID is the way to go. i have tried probably 3 or 4 different types of bulbs and i still was not impressed due to the lack of nighttime lighting. when i installed the HID system, WOW. now nighttime driving on country roads is very well illuminated. the system i installed was basically plug and play. hook up hot wire to the battery and ground the black wire and the rest just plug and play. you will have to install a few little jumper wires on the headlight bypass relay which is behind the headlight. the new HID draws less amperage and the relay senses that low beam is burnt out and switches to high beam and the white indicator comes on. we can assist you with where the jumpers go if you plan on going this route. cheers, Scott
djh3 Posted May 13, 2013 #4 Posted May 13, 2013 I would have to say +1 atleast on the HID. I've got a 2nd gen but still the lighting of the HID is superb to the 85/100w bulb I was running. There is several guys who have put the HID in the 1st gens. There is some jumpers or something that have to be done to keep a warning light or something off. You can find motorcycle kits on e-bay from $30 up. When looking make sure the kit comes with bulb, wiring harness with relay and the ballest. Plug an play is what your looking for. Plug in your headlight number 9006 or whatever and conversion. 600k is about the best I think. Has slight blueish tint but not blue like sky. Check some posts youll see what most are running. I just looked and some kits are under $20.
Flyinfool Posted May 13, 2013 #5 Posted May 13, 2013 +1 more I have the HID in my 88 and will never go back. There is no such thing as a plug and play for a 1st gen but the changes needed are no big deal. Make sure that whatever brand you get is a bi-xenon bulb. Bi-xenon means that you will have HID for both Hi and Lo beam. Some of the cheaper sets you give up Hi beam altogether or some have a halogen bulb for Hi beam. There is a writeup on the conversion. It sounds harder than it is.
