Ok, well I just got a 2000 V Star 650 and it is leaking oil from the right side cover. I bought a wix 24936 oil filter with o'ring hoping that would fix the leak. When I pulled the old filter I eyeballed it next to the new one. The Wix is taller than the one that was in there. So just for a test I put the new one in and it seems too tall. The cover doesn't sit flush against the engine. Then I replaced the o'ring and put the old filter back in a put the cover back on and took it for a ride. Still leaking. I'm lost here guys. I dont know how oil is getting past the o'ring and leaking out of the case cover. Any help is much needed, I really don't want to ride it while oil is leaking down the side of it.

Could be a crack in the cover, grab some cleaner and clean the cover real well, if there is a crack it will show up as a black line.

You say filter with o-ring. Would that be the o-ring on the filter cover? On my Virago not only does the cover have an o-ring but so does the bottom cover bolt. Lots of people lose that one. If you pull the cover and look at the inside where the bottom bolt goes through you might see a circular depression that is supposed to seat an o-ring.

Just a guess but might be worth a look.

Well I checked and no o'ring for the bolts is needed. However I did notice one thing. I keep asking how is the oil getting past the o'ring and leaking out, then I looked at the indside of the case really good and what I thought was just bad casting could possibly be a crack. Not really sure tho. If there is a crack that would explain how oil is getting past the o'ring and leaking out of the case. The more I look at this case the more I realize what a crappy casting it is. I think there may possibly be a fissure in the casting that is letting oil seep through. Question, what is the best way to solder or seal a possible crack with this type of metal and casting?

For the best advice on this one, we might do better with some pictures.

You could try JB weld, but it might not hold due to expansion, contraction of the case.

Well I looked at it again today in better light and while the casting isn't pretty there is no definable crack. I have considered changing to a heavier oil like 20W50 which is not bad for a bike here in hot Texas. But am still confused on how oil is leaking past the oring in the first place. And also why the WIX oil filter doesnt fit. Thanks for all the advice, keep it coming I really need to fix this problem.

If you have a leak, you have a leak and heavier oil won't fix the problem.

Clean everything real well, start the bike and watch where exactly the oil comes from. If it comes off the bottom, try to follow it to the top, to make sure it is coming from the bottom.
