Trouble with lithium batteries is they require proper recharging regimen that limits the maximum volts the battery can attain. Exceeding the limit ruins the battery. The motorcycle charging system does not regulate the maximum volts and could easily ruin it on a longer ride. Gotta match the charging system to the battery. Also, if long cranking is required due to some problem, the battery can be discharged to the point of no recovery. Must pay close attention to volt levels for discharge and charging to have it last. That's too much trouble for me.......

I considered something like that for its low weight. But then I realized the 18 lbs of a normal AGM battery is actually less than a full tank of fuel which is normally carried above the engine, I went with the proven technology and half the cost of the AGM design.

Lithium batteries are not a good fit for our charging systems, and you can buy two good lead-acid batteries for that price.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have a battery from q 2003 that is a lead aced and is 1 year old and I am giving it a way for free if you come and pick it up.

That would be a bit of a ride for him Rob! Yes, that is a pretty pricey battery indeed! Go with the Deka battery for half the price! Member Skydoc_17 is a distributer for them and will give you an excellent price delivered right to your doorstep. Just give Earl a PM...

I was at a dealer, discussing Lithium batteries with the parts counter guy. He told me that the first ones on the market ( about 3 years ago ) did have problem's. Don't remember exactly what they were. However, he claimed that the manufacture had Overcome those problems, and they were solved.

Also told me that the Lithium bats. are becoming very popular with the " Raceing Bike guys " due to the weight saveings, and space restrictions. ( Less weight on a race bike is a big deal, I guess )

I read thru the " Spec's " posted for that battery, Very Impressive !!! to say the least.!!!!

As to the " Reliability " of these new bats, I really don't know, and have not heard much about that.

---- Except--- All the current news stories, about the Boeing 787 Aircraft Batteries, that have been Overheating, and starting fires !! Those batteries are " Lithium " techology type batteries, ???? Boeing, has " Encased " them, inside an enclosure, " Air Tight " to prevent " Fire " in the event of Overheating. That is basicly what the New Fix, for the 787 battery problem is. ( Put it inside an Air Tight Box ) .

I also think they have Added, more Electronic " Monitoring " for the battery system due

to the fire problems. ??? I will be checking into this, as I have contacts in the Industry.

My 08 RSTD, came New, with an AGM type battery. So Far, I am very impressed with the performance.

The Odyssey PC 680 that I installed in the 89 about 7 years ago. Two of them, one failed after about 5 years. the 2nd one is still in service 7 years later.

( I am useing that one for the #2 Battery in my new 08 RSTD, for extra radio equipment )

I also have a PC-545 size Odyessy, ((AGM Type )) installed on my 99 Busa, its been in service for 6 years now, and still doing fine !!

As to those new Lithium batteries, they are probably great!! However not a lot of User Reports, out there as yet to how they hold up " In Service " ??????

(( Unless you need the weight reduction on your bike , if that is important to you ))

I am looking into the new Lithium type, for replacement on my Sports Bike as my old, PC-545 is getting up there in age. I might put one on the Busa later this year, after doing more research on them.

My advice would be, stay with the DEKA, AGM type's for around $ 100.00 plus or minus. They are Proven good quality, and not as pricey as the Lithium.

Check with " Condor" here for best priceing !!

And, electrically, the AGM's are FAR Superior, to a Lead Acid !!!

Lithium batteries have a set number of charge cycles. when you hit that limit it dies rapidly. So you can start and ride your bike 1500 times then replace the battery. (assuming it has a 1500 cycle limit, cellphone batteries have a 1500 charge cycle limit) Need to see the full specs on the battery that shows the charge cycle lifetime.

Lead Acid does not have this problem, nor does it have the rapid failure point, it is far more gradual.

Racing guys dont care if a battery only lasts 300 times. IF they win more because of the lighter weight they will pay 500X the price for something. A bike racing friend paid $8900 for a set of carbon fiber wheels for his bike that are 3 pounds lighter.

Besides all the negative press on this batt they have it listed as something that will fit our Ventures. The dimentions are for something around 4.5 inches square. It won't fit in the battery box of either gen.... That's why I like the DEKA's footprint.
