Knowing that the RSV has a detuned 1300cc VMax motor in it... does anyone know what was "detuned"? Other than dropping in a VMax motor.... if one were to "tune" a Venture engine, what would one do ?

I know we are always complaining that the Venture hasn't seen updates since its introduction in '99... but reading Wikipedia on the VMax, things could be worse.

Until 2008, the original V-Max was offered for sale through the Star Motorcycles division of Yamaha Motorcycles. Apart from a minor freshening to the bike's specifications in 1993, when the bike gained a larger-diameter fork to minimize high-speed wobbling and drift, four-piston brake calipers, and other handling and safety related upgrades, the 2008 V-Max was almost the same as the original 1985 version.

...2009 ... features of the VMAX include an all aluminium frame with its 1,679 cc (102 cu in) liquid cooled V4 DOHC engine used as a stressed member of the chassis, an electroluminescent instrument readout, Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake (YCC-I), fully adjustable suspension, anti-lock brakes, slipper clutch, a fuel tank beneath the seat, and a distinctive key

23 years unchanged...think they'll run out of cassette players before then !

Don't know what we did before the Internet.....doing a search :

Fixya :

The carburetors are different, the cams (cam lobe/position) timing is different, the exhaust is restricted, I believe the CDI timing has been changed, and the counter balancer shaft in the main block of the motor has been removed causing more wear ,tear, and vibration in the motor. The spot in the motor is still in the motor for the counter balancer shaft in front of the crank shaft so it can be put in . there may be other changes but these are probably the most critical. It is not cost effective to upgrade a Royal Star unless you have a donor Vmax.

He also claims "new style Royal Star (most restricted and self destructive). The motors have been so greatly detuned that they have lost some reliability."

Another source (http://www.modifiedcadillac.org/) - "smaller cam with softer springs in it, smaller carbs, and higher transmission and rear gear ratios... carbs are 28 mm compared to the V-max having 35 mm carbs"

I'm not looking to do it.... just curious what it would take. If someone else wanted to do it and had the $$$$.... this might be a good way to spur them on. :-)

Been there, done that, doing it again as you read this to a 2003 RSV frame with a 1st gen VMax configured 1300 block.

1st gen with a VMax upgrade was fairly easy, other than the air box mod.

2nd gen with VMax upgrade is a challenge. Exhaust system & air cleaners are big challenges.

This applies to the 1996 to 2001 Royal Star but not the Venture.

1996-2001 Royal star 28mm carb

1999-2013 Royal Star Venture 32mm carb
