Acadieman Posted April 30, 2013 #1 Posted April 30, 2013 What is the best way to remove a bit of engine oil when you have too much . Drain plug or remove oil filter ?
StarFan Posted April 30, 2013 #3 Posted April 30, 2013 Well, I would not remove the filter for sure. I would loosen the drainplug (bolt) to let all the oil out and drain it into a clean container and then just pour the right amount in. That way you can use the same oil again. I´ve tried once removing the drain bolt to tap a little off the engine and got a 3/4 gallon on my garage floor . The oil was hot and I could not get the bolt in again and my drain pan got pushed to the side. From that incident I fill it with + 1/2 a gallon and then run the bike untill the oil is hot. Then I just add a little at a time untill I am satisfied with the reading on the glass. There might be other ways to do this that I am not familiar with and I am sure somebody else will chime in. Many of us have overfilled but I think one only does that once Good luck and keep the rags at hand
CaptainJoe Posted April 30, 2013 #4 Posted April 30, 2013 Just Park it in someones driveway you don't really care for. It will work itself out eventually. Seriously though +1 on the drain plug.
djh3 Posted April 30, 2013 #5 Posted April 30, 2013 How much to much did you get in? Any chance of slipping a piece of tubing in the fill hole and pulling it out with a syringe or something?
Acadieman Posted May 1, 2013 Author #6 Posted May 1, 2013 i put in 3.7 liters and its to the top of the sight glass. it should be half way if im not mistaken.
Yammer Dan Posted May 1, 2013 #7 Posted May 1, 2013 No more than that I wouldn't worry. It is a good way to make a mess....... Ask Skid.
djh3 Posted May 1, 2013 #8 Posted May 1, 2013 If thats all like Dan said dont fret. It will probably blow out what it dont like and make a mess in the breather boxs.
ragtop69gs Posted May 1, 2013 #9 Posted May 1, 2013 If thats all like Dan said dont fret. It will probably blow out what it dont like and make a mess in the breather boxs. Well lubricated breather boxes won't rust.
Ozlander Posted May 1, 2013 #10 Posted May 1, 2013 I've always put 4 quarts in with a filter change. Never had a problem and it's always down to the half way mark when it'd time to change again.
dacheedah Posted May 2, 2013 #11 Posted May 2, 2013 some will run into the filter, is the bike level when checking the fluid, not on sidestand.
Acadieman Posted May 2, 2013 Author #12 Posted May 2, 2013 Took some oil out yesterday via drain plug (no problem). It is now half way in the site glass. All is good . Thanks to all who replied to my Threads:bighug:
Galapagos Posted May 2, 2013 #13 Posted May 2, 2013 I use 3.5 qts of oil. Mine still likes to mark its territory.
