wideopenrod Posted April 26, 2013 #1 Posted April 26, 2013 Had lightening just hit a tree in our yard. Tree is about 50ft tall and 3ft in diameter. Trunk is completely bare, the bark exploded off from top to bottom of trunk, as well as it is split from top to bottom. Never seen anything like it.
Snaggletooth Posted April 26, 2013 #2 Posted April 26, 2013 Yikes!! Kind of kills the joy of wearing my tin foil hat outside today.
GolfVenture Posted April 26, 2013 #3 Posted April 26, 2013 Wow... I had a lighting strike last July very close to my house. The lighting swirled around the tree blowing bark off in a swirl. Found tree remains 50 ft away. Had to take tree down and the one tree in front of the falling direction. Caused damaged to my hot tub, garage door opener, battery maintenance charger, Wireless phone unit, Freezer, Home insurance was $1000.00 deductible.

MiCarl Posted April 26, 2013 #7 Posted April 26, 2013 Not every day you can get your firewood split before you cut it up.......... Shouldn't have to worry about bark falling off in the living room either.
Brake Pad Posted April 26, 2013 #8 Posted April 26, 2013 seems to be split right, just needs to be cut to size, what? maybe two cords out of that ?
Dooder1 Posted April 26, 2013 #9 Posted April 26, 2013 Down here in Missouri where I live the old timers say its bad luck to burn wood hit by lightning. If you believe in that kind of thing. I dont. John

Miles Posted April 27, 2013 #23 Posted April 27, 2013 Rod, those are cool pictures. An idea...cut down the top of the tree, removing all branches that would eventually fall on passing Harleys', and leave about 10 feet of the truck and roots in place. You would end up with a 10 foot tall naked trunk left standing. Then have a chainsaw artist come out and carve a really cool looking scene into the remaining trunk, like...a lightning bolt, or something...so that you have the remains to remind you, and your neighbors, or what happened, and it would be cool to see every day.
bongobobny Posted April 27, 2013 #24 Posted April 27, 2013 That tree had quite the electrifying experience, didn't it?? I got a charge out of those pictures...
