GolfVenture Posted April 26, 2013 #1 Posted April 26, 2013 Ok, I think the power steering pump on my aging 94 Saturn SC2 is going out. It just turned over 190K. About 3 weeks ago it was wining and so I checked the fluid level and noticed it was below the min mark, so I filled it up. Well yesterday I filled it up again. Could it be something else besided the PS pump? Are there anything tricky about replacing a PS pump?
Peder_y2k Posted April 26, 2013 #2 Posted April 26, 2013 Well the noise is the pump, but the fluid loss could be the pump, hoses, or steering gear. A simple exam for wetness should indicate which. Replacement is no problem. Best to buy one that is as complete as possible with reservoir, pulley, etc.. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88
djh3 Posted April 26, 2013 #3 Posted April 26, 2013 Sounds as thought its in the steering system. Try to locate the leak, could be a line or the steering rack also. The "whine" is air in the pump most likely. Fluid gets low, sucks air and then makes the noise. If its around the pulley its probably a front seal on the pump. Should be pretty easy to sort out where the leak is. Hose not a big problem to change, if its the steering rack thats a different story. If you replace the rack you'll need to get the fron end aligned after replacing more than likely.
