Kayawtic1 Posted April 25, 2013 #1 Posted April 25, 2013 I am new here and am in dire need of some advice! I purchased a custom 99 rsv from a buddy and the bike rode great. A couple months ago some idiot tried to hot wire the bike and when he couldn't do it just tore the bike apart. I had to change out the main switch battery and most of the wiring. I just recently did the bypass on the main switch and everything seemed ok but now i seem to have continuity between my yellow wire to ground on headlight and red/black to ground on main harness i cant seem to track down the short any advice would be greatly appreciated.
etcswjoe Posted April 25, 2013 #2 Posted April 25, 2013 Morning, Here is a link to the wiring diagram if you do not already have it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42357 I will look when I get home too and see if I can come up with some ideas for you.
Kayawtic1 Posted April 25, 2013 Author #3 Posted April 25, 2013 im sorry i forgot a very important fact. when my buddy customized it he got rid of all the fairing the cruise the radio and carb heaters so to get all the safety bypasses to work the wiring is basically a 98 royal star and as i have had to change all the wiring as i went thru the bike i kept it a 98 new loom and all this is one of the main reasons im having so much trouble
Condor Posted April 25, 2013 #4 Posted April 25, 2013 im sorry i forgot a very important fact. when my buddy customized it he got rid of all the fairing the cruise the radio and carb heaters so to get all the safety bypasses to work the wiring is basically a 98 royal star and as i have had to change all the wiring as i went thru the bike i kept it a 98 new loom and all this is one of the main reasons im having so much trouble When someone starts to get away from OEM, and rewire a bunch of stuff, it's anyones guess Frank. You might check with the p.o. 'buddy' to see what he did. This board is really good at tracking down gremlins in OEM, but none of us have a crystal ball...... And a pox on the guy that ripped your scoot apart....
Kayawtic1 Posted April 25, 2013 Author #5 Posted April 25, 2013 believe me i do understand this has been an electrical night mare I do know this system like the back of my hand now but for some reason I have gone completely brain dead on how to track down shorts i've been staring at this way to much and way to long
Condor Posted April 25, 2013 #6 Posted April 25, 2013 believe me i do understand this has been an electrical night mare I do know this system like the back of my hand now but for some reason I have gone completely brain dead on how to track down shorts i've been staring at this way to much and way to long Try pulling all your fuses and put a multi over each hot to ground. This might help to get you close to where the short is???
jakester Posted April 25, 2013 #7 Posted April 25, 2013 I agree with Condor, I will pull one fuse at a time until I isolate the short. It is a place to start. Good luck. Bill
Kayawtic1 Posted April 26, 2013 Author #9 Posted April 26, 2013 ok guys first i want to say thank you i did as you suggested and found my short it was in the front turn signals. I disassembled the lights and found numerous bad wiring so i replaced all the wiring reassembled the unit reinstalled the light bar and voila same damn problem an 3 out of 4 of the positive wires. ??????????????????????????????????????
bongobobny Posted April 26, 2013 #10 Posted April 26, 2013 A lot of times the light bar can indeed be a problem with shorts if the wiring is not dressed properly. The usual culprit is wire chafing due to vibration. Don't ask how I know this...
jakester Posted April 26, 2013 #11 Posted April 26, 2013 I had a friend long ago that said he was an electrician on a submarine. He claims the military tought him to put a much too large fuse in and wait for the short to burn a wire. Then just replace the effected wire. I have never tried this , but it is not my bike eather. Just don't burn the bike up. Bill
Kayawtic1 Posted April 26, 2013 Author #12 Posted April 26, 2013 i found the culprit its the retaining brackets that hold the sockets in the reflectors but every time i seem to get them working as soon as i try to button her up she goes right back to same old tricks are those metal clips actually necessary?
