Venturous Randy Posted April 25, 2013 #1 Posted April 25, 2013 On some of the videos and documents I try to open, I get this blue screen called Windows Media Center. It has various media things noted, but there is nothing that I can find that allows me to go any further. I just downloaded a PDF file in my documents and it shows it is saved and available, but I can not get it opened. What program am I missing or what am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help and suggestions. RandyA
dacheedah Posted April 25, 2013 #2 Posted April 25, 2013 for the pdf download adobe acrobat reader, plenty of free versions and I would download it from adobe

Venturous Randy Posted April 25, 2013 Author #5 Posted April 25, 2013 I downloaded the Adobe Reader and can now can get the file open, but the blue screen is still popping up first, but now I can minimize it and the PDF file is behind it. So, at least now I can get into the file. Sometimes I can do ok when trying to figure out some of these glitches, but I sure wish I knew more than I do about these things. The great part is how helpful you folks are on here. RandyA

RandyA You might try this.... right click on the pdf file and in the drop down select "open with" in this screen you select "choose default program" then select the Adobe Reader and make sure the check box at the bottom is selected to "always use the selected program to open this kind of file". That should change the association with Windows Media Play so it won't think it should try to open the file.

That should change the association with Windows Media Play so it won't think it should try to open the file. It won't let me open in Adobe Reader and says it does not support this file. I had to go back to Windows to open it. This is a repair manual I just bought and downloaded for an 02 Infinity that I just picked up that has a blown head gasket. I can get it open now, but I still have to maneuver around to do it. RandyA
hubbsfd Posted April 25, 2013 #8 Posted April 25, 2013 Hmmmm.... in earlier posts in indicated that after install Adobe Reader it now opens (just having the Windows Media Player popping up too). I'm confused why it opens after installing Adobe but says it can't open it. Oh well, glad you can workaround it and use your purchased file. Good luck with the repair.
PGunn Posted April 25, 2013 #10 Posted April 25, 2013 Sounds like an app is mapped through Internet explorer to open pdf files but is either broken or has been uninstalled but I would lean toward broken. When that blue screen you talk about does it say what application it is trying to open or is the apps name on the open window? Adobe "should" open in Internet explorer and show you the pdf but isn't because some app is blocking it. Try this, now this is with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9 but I would believe 8 or 10 work the same way or similar: 1) open control panel 2) open "Internet Properties" 3) click on the "Programs" tab 4) click the "Set Programs" button 5) click on "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" 6) wait for the list to fill 7) scroll down to the .PDF click on it 8) click the "Change program" button 9) browse to the Adobe application and select the .exe program You need to do this with both the .pdf and .pdfxml extensions
gmarshall Posted April 25, 2013 #11 Posted April 25, 2013 Try going into control panel, installed programs, and deleting windows media center.
wrnchjox Posted April 26, 2013 #12 Posted April 26, 2013 you might also try installing mozilla firefox and make that your default and eliminate internet explorer and all of its problems(worked on my computer)
