Peder_y2k Posted April 16, 2013 #1 Posted April 16, 2013 Other than proper torque for the cover bolts, any tips to ensure good seal of the valve cover gasket? Any tricks on installation, such a gluing the gasket to the cover first? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88
Carbon_One Posted April 16, 2013 #2 Posted April 16, 2013 Apply a dab of wheel bearing grease in several spots around the cover. Doing so will keep the gasket in place while getting the cover in position. Larry

Prairiehammer Posted April 16, 2013 #4 Posted April 16, 2013 I've heard tell here (or somewhere) that using the Second Gen valve cover gaskets on the First Gen makes for an easier installation. Don't know why that would be so, though. Here's the thread in which SkyDoc recommends the Second Gen gaskets, post #10. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=404213
Peder_y2k Posted April 16, 2013 Author #5 Posted April 16, 2013 Prairiehammer, The difference between genI-II gaskets is that the genII gasket is wider, making it easier to grab onto and maneuver. I don't need easy, I need effective - translated: no leaks for next umpteen years. Just want to it once, so not to do it over again.....ever. -Pete
Prairiehammer Posted April 16, 2013 #6 Posted April 16, 2013 Any tricks on installation, such a gluing the gasket to the cover first? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 So sorry for offering a tip on installation. According to Earl, there is a (self-aligning) rib on the Second Gen to make sure the gasket doesn't become dislodged...resulting in a leak. I wasn't aware that Second Gen gaskets wouldn't seal for years. Carry on.

dingy Posted April 16, 2013 #8 Posted April 16, 2013 The 'tabs' on 2nd gen will be rather noticable on the front cylinders on a 1st gen. The chrome valve cover caps hide them on the 2nd gen. Gary
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted April 16, 2013 #9 Posted April 16, 2013 I cleaned my cover with "brake cleaner" let it dry, put a bead of RTV silicone around it, set my gasket into that and let it set overnight. Next day installed the cover. It has been 3 years and has not leaked. I am pretty sure I got the procedure from here somewhere or from someone here. It would appear that that was how the gaskets had been installed in the past also.
