heater97 Posted April 15, 2013 #1 Posted April 15, 2013 I have had my 1988 venture for a year now and have had no issues. While riding it yesterday I shifted into 4th gear and a clicking sound started. It is like something is not engauageing but it still shifts into 4th and drives. Gears 1-3 don't do it just in 4th. took the side cover off and all seemed normal. Just am at a loss. Love this bike just don't know what to do.
Prairiehammer Posted April 15, 2013 #2 Posted April 15, 2013 Did the clicking go away in fifth gear? Did the clicking sound increase and decrease with change in road speed? Was the click rhythmic? Did the sound change in intensity or frequency with a change in engine rpm? Could you identify where the sound was coming from? Engine? Wheels? Helmet?
heater97 Posted April 15, 2013 Author #3 Posted April 15, 2013 It was clicking in 5th. The clicking did increase with RPM. Sounded like it was coming from right side engine cover where the clutch pack is. The clicking is constant in those gears.
Prairiehammer Posted April 15, 2013 #4 Posted April 15, 2013 Did the clicking continue with the clutch lever pulled in as you coasted in fourth or fifth? If it did; as the bike slowed, did the clicking frequency slow as well?
Peder_y2k Posted April 15, 2013 #5 Posted April 15, 2013 (edited) I'm beginning to suspect the final drive. The drive pinion gear threaded stud may have broken, and the retaining nut that keeps the couping gear snug is now loose. When this happens, the system works fine under acceleration loads, but unloaded or decel will make noise. heater97 Posted April 15, 2013 Author #6 Posted April 15, 2013 When the bike was sitting on the side stand yesterday in nutral it did it then once i lifted the bike it stopped. And no when you pull the clutch it stops if i am going down the road. I put it in 4th gear on the center stand it only did it when it was in gear.
Prairiehammer Posted April 15, 2013 #7 Posted April 15, 2013 A rattling noise in the clutch is fairly common. Pulling in the clutch lever while idling usually ceases the racket. Mine does it. Though I've never noticed it going down the road at speed. Was this noise actually present going down the road or just when you run it in gear on the centerstand?

heater97 Posted July 3, 2013 Author #10 Posted July 3, 2013 So i replaced the clutch and just decided to ride it for a while now it clicks in nutral and has no 3rd gear. Also i discovered that the tabs on the oppisite side of the clutch were just laying in the housing all 4 bolts sheared off. please help

Do you mean on the left side of the engine? You took the middle gear cover off and found broken bolts? Could you describe the "tabs"? Are they (the tabs) the bearing retainers for the middle gear shaft? The bolts that are sheared off; are they Torx recess heads? Is this pic depicting where you are talking about? The middle gear cover is removed on the left side of the engine, toward the rear of the engine/transmission.

TORQUE BOLTS TO SPEC, AND YOU WILL HAVE TO FLATEN THE RETAINER FIRST , BECAUSE THE FACTORY USED A PUNCH TO HOLD THE BOLTS IN PLACE,, SOUNDS LIKE THE BOLTS CAME LOSE,, THEN STRAIN OF VIBRATION BROKE THEM.. THEY ARE NOT HARDENED BOLTS WHEN YOU PUT RETAINER BACK ON YOU SHOULD SEE BEARING MOVE BACK IN ,, OR TAKE A RUBBER HAMMER AND SEE IF IT MOVES IN AT ALL,,

Prairiehammer Posted July 3, 2013 #15 Posted July 3, 2013 Those screws are Yamaha part number 90149-08152-00. When I run that number, however it is obsolete. SOME parts fiche say that obsolete number has been superseded with this number: 90149-08013-00 The part number will tell you the size; in this case it is 8mm diameter, 13mm in length. BUT, this screw has a flat head configuration, making it more difficult to find a non Yamaha replacement. The Torx recess head is probably required in order to get a reliable torque.
