On 2nd gens they're used to attach the lower fairings on. No idea where they would be used on a 1st gen bike.

It looks like one of the oil passage plugs which sit in the top of the cam towers. Has he had his valve cover off recently?

Had the clutch apart, the middle gear cover off, the clutch slave, and all the brakes. It must have come from somewhere,, or is it a coffee can item?

Having just spent a few days in the area of the middle gear cover and through the clutch slave I can say this.

 

Don't think so. I think you're safe in that area.

I was thinking that it was some sort of bumper that sits inside the clutch cover lower rear corner for the shift rod inside to bump up against at the end of its movement. Guess I will have to take the cover off again to be sure. Its solid rubber with a mushroom head and two ribs around the barrel part to retain it in a hole.
