kyle Posted April 12, 2013 #1 Posted April 12, 2013 I just bought xm snap for the bike but now i need another 12 volt source for the gps. can i hardwire gps cord inside fairing to the backside of the 12 volt outlet?? If i do this do i need an inline fuse, if so how many amps?? I was thinking I would drill small hole in fairing to slip wire thru then dab some silicone to wateproof, is this a good idea??
reddevilmedic Posted April 12, 2013 #2 Posted April 12, 2013 there are specific hardwire kits for diff gps's. check ebay, or buy form gps manufacturer. I use a Powerlet...
RedRider Posted April 12, 2013 #3 Posted April 12, 2013 It sounds like it is time to add an auxiliary fuse block. They fit nicely under the fairing. My favorite - a little more expensive, but really nice http://fuzeblocks.com/ There are several other options out there. RR
GeorgeS Posted April 12, 2013 #4 Posted April 12, 2013 Whenever you " add " anything, its always best to install a seperate fuse. At least, an " In Line " fuse in the + line to the new item. Its easy, and you can get them most any auto parts store, if you don't have one. ( or radio shack of course )
kyle Posted April 12, 2013 Author #7 Posted April 12, 2013 so, I'm thinking my idea will work ??? that fuzeblock looks real cool but too much $$$ for me right now.
reddevilmedic Posted April 12, 2013 #8 Posted April 12, 2013 yes, but make sure you use the right wire for gps. it needs to be "stepped down" in voltage so it doesn't fry the electronics. I really don't know how it works, but that's what im told....like skydoc said, im an "electrical weenie"....
kyle Posted April 12, 2013 Author #9 Posted April 12, 2013 well I just bought a hardwire kit on ebay for $19.00. reduces voltage and is direct fit for my gps. thanks for all the input, like I say , this is the most knowladgable forum out there.
