Winter Storm Warning

Issued at Wednesday, 10 April, 2013 3:32 PM

A wintery combination of ice pellets and freezing rain on the way. Periodic rain will affect the area tonight, but a more wintery change is on the way. Colder air will arrive later tonight and coincide with an approaching low currently over Missouri. Ice pellets mixed with some snow are expected to develop on Thursday in the warned regions and generally change to freezing rain later Thursday or Thursday night. It may very well fall heavy at times. Poor travel conditions are expected over the duration of this event. In particular, the Thursday afternoon commute may be challenging with icy conditions on untreated roads. Of greater concern is the risk of widespread power outages due to downed tree limbs and power lines due to significant ice accumulation combined with northeast winds gusting to 60 km/h. There is a risk that this could be a major ice storm for an appreciable swath of Southern Ontario. It should taper off by Friday morning with temperatures rising above freezing. There is still some uncertainty as to the extent of the cold air. This will have an impact on how much falls as ice pellets versus freezing rain. Freezing rain will have a higher impact with power outages and slippery roads and sidewalks. But the expected 5 to 10 cm of ice pellets will also be problematic for travellers.

My fellow carpenters, here in Tennessee, although not liking the cold (who wants to walk top plates that have frost on them) don't like the heat either when its 90+ with high humidy. I tell them there is no such thing as to much heat and to bring it on!! I can tolerate cold better then most from my military winter survival training but I believe I also like it the least! Yep, I am a true Florida boy!!

I'm also in the trades and tell you that I would rather work in the cold weather outside then than the 95 degree 100% humidity days for sure. I love going to Florida for a couple weeks every year but you can keep it the other 50. As for this current rainy crap it's only good for the ducks lol

Yesterday was interesting in WI, some places had 3+inches of rain, some had freezing rain, and some had over a foot of wet heavy snow. There are power outages every where. We will be happy to pack this one up and send on to the north and east,,,,,,,,,

South Dakota got it pretty bad as well. Black Hills (Rapid City) had just short of 30 inches of snow. Sioux Falls (southeast) has really bad ice and alot of snow. Hundreds of trees and powerlines down. Some areas out of power for 36 hours. Pierre (central) has almost 20 inches. As for me in the northeast, we got missed the first day, woke up this a.m. to 9 inches of snow and its still snowing.

Silver lining is that several of these areas needed moisture badly. But feel bad for the farmers/ranchers that have cattle calving. Gotta be tough all over.
