Trader Posted April 10, 2013 #1 Posted April 10, 2013 Just spent a LONG night sitting with my Dad and my brothers. I came home tonight....but pretty much just waiting for the call to say he's gone. He was diagnosed with esophagus cancer about 6 months ago and it's run it's course. He is at home and comfortable.....and I guess that's what matters. We were going to transfer him to a home as he was just getting to be too much to care for....but now he's got a catheter and is basically comatose, he doesn't need much care so we are letting him die at home. He asked my sister to shave off his beard because Mom wouldn't like it! ( she died 3 years ago) He's one month short of 85 and told me he's OK with it....he's ready. Said my goodbye's today and although we think he had a stroke and can't speak, he wakes for about 10 seconds when we "roll" him and he gave me thumbs up. My sister soaked his dentures in single malt and that put a smile on his face! He's not religious....so he wouldn't appreciate my asking for your prayers....but good thoughts can't hurt! hmmm.....60 years old and crying like a baby
Sylvester Posted April 11, 2013 #2 Posted April 11, 2013 I feel for you and your family. Both my parents are gone and I was there for both of them at the end. I feel it was important to both of them that I and my sisters were there.
relic Posted April 11, 2013 #3 Posted April 11, 2013 Sorry to hear this news. It is never an easy thing even if expected. Our thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
deepforkriver Posted April 11, 2013 #4 Posted April 11, 2013 Completely understand. Our thoughts and prayers will be with your family tonight. Prayers help. Not a doubt in my mind. James
slowrollwv Posted April 11, 2013 #5 Posted April 11, 2013 I feel for you and your family. My mother passed about the same way.
Barrycuda Posted April 11, 2013 #6 Posted April 11, 2013 (edited) Trader: I am sorry you are dealing with this. These feelings can be overwhelming. 2 years ago last week, I lost my mom, who was everything to me. I watched her pass away after she was in a LTAC in New Jersey for 6 weeks. I was bedside the entire time. It still gets me choked up now. We all wish we can do more. I wish you peace through all this. Call me or email me anytime you wish to vent. Kregerdoodle Posted April 11, 2013 #12 Posted April 11, 2013 So sorry to hear of this, I have lost both of my parents to Cancer and was with them both at their passing, it is not a easy thing to go through, even when you know its going to happen, just know that he will be in a better place and free of pain, he will always be with you, during good times and bad. Your father and you and your family will be in our thoughts. Kreg & Janet
dbikers Posted April 11, 2013 #13 Posted April 11, 2013 oh brother, i don't envy you. death is the final act of living, we are all going to be there and although it doesn't make it any easier it sounds like you are trying to make the most of a bad situation. hold and relish the warmth of his hand....talk to him even if he doesn't hear. it will bring comfort to him and you. god bless you and your family as you are in our thoughts and prayers
Wade 2000 Posted April 11, 2013 #14 Posted April 11, 2013 I don't really know what to say but I am thinking of you and your brothers tonight. In times like these I try to focus on the good times in their lives and those they touched
dogman Posted April 11, 2013 #15 Posted April 11, 2013 Steve, our thoughts are with you and your Dad. It is not easy seeing our loved ones suffer, but it does give us time to say all we want which we may feel we havn't if someone is taken suddenly. Be strong for you Dad and as others have said keep talking to him and holding his hand or holding him. God Bless
DragonRider Posted April 11, 2013 #16 Posted April 11, 2013 Its hard letting them go............sounds like everyone got to say their goodbyes. Soon he will be with your mom in a much better place. Our prayers go out to you and your family.
Evan Posted April 11, 2013 #17 Posted April 11, 2013 Steve, please know that you do have my good thoughts. Almost lost my own father a month or so ago, and for the second time. The first time around, he had a "near death" experience, which was quite euphoric for him. In recent years, he and I consider and celebrate every day as "bonus time", both for him and for us. I hope you are able to focus on good memories in the days ahead.
rogerhessler Posted April 11, 2013 #18 Posted April 11, 2013 Prayers to you and your family lost my dad a couple years ago too.
AngryAmish Posted April 11, 2013 #19 Posted April 11, 2013 My thoughts are with you and your family at this time. My dad passed away in '08. He was 83 and still hurts
Yammer Dan Posted April 11, 2013 #20 Posted April 11, 2013 He will always be with you. Mine still talks to me. Goods thought for you at this time.
Phoneman1981 Posted April 11, 2013 #21 Posted April 11, 2013 Thinking of you. I certainly know what you are going through. Lost both parents a year ago within 60 days of one another. Now a year later I am so glad they passed in their home. Your memories will keep you going.
BIG TOM Posted April 11, 2013 #22 Posted April 11, 2013 Steve, I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.....

mini-muffin Posted April 11, 2013 #24 Posted April 11, 2013 Sorry to hear of your pain. Doesn't make it easy no matter how old you are to lose a parent. It makes you feel a bit better for them knowing they are at peace with it. My heart breaks for you and your siblings Margaret
Snaggletooth Posted April 11, 2013 #25 Posted April 11, 2013 My heart goes out to you tonight. I'm sorry for your Fathers situation. It's hard to know what to say at the end. Peace be with you all at this time.
