I went to start my bike today and I didn't hear the normal clicking of the fuel pump. After trying again several times I took off the side panel and tapped on the pump. That didn't change anything. All I hear is a little clunk.

After reading several threads I'm thinking that it might be a nasty fuel filter that needs changed out. (I don't know if the previous owner ever did that.)

Does that sound about right, or is my pump gone bad?

Is everyone still recommending the Mr Gasket 42S, if I need to replace the pump?

Thanks

Not sure about the 98 models but that is what I just installed on my RSV last week.

The Mr. Gasket 42s I had to do some rearranging under the side cover to get everything to fit. I also purchased two brass close nipples and two brass 90's and used the supplied filter. It will require tools to change the filter but it is easy to get to now. I also picked up a spare filter to carry on the bike. Sorry didn't take any pics I was kinda in a hurry to get somewhere.

It's Not the fuel filter- that restricts gas flow and causes the pump to click longer. A clogged filter may have killed your pump, but that is a different issue. If your pump is not clicking after sitting for a day or more, it is bad.

The 42s is the most common replacement, but it is not the best choice. It does not have the positive fuel cutoff of the stock pump. See my parts alternative thread in the tech library for a better choice.
