Brake Pad Posted April 9, 2013 #1 Posted April 9, 2013 I hear people talking about replacing the rear end with a V max Driveshaft.. Why? I have a guy in my neighborhood, that is selling a V max for 500.00 bucks. Is the replacement, that good? Pro's and con's?

This will make pulling your trailer easier and with this change, 5th gear will be more responsive and you may even get better gas mileage. $500 seems to be a bit steep for me on the rear end and you will need to get the housing machined for the speedometer hookup. Miles Posted April 9, 2013 #3 Posted April 9, 2013 Changing the rear diff gears to be that of the V-Max gears makes all the difference in the world. As so many have already said,. it is the very best performance upgrade that you can do to your bike. The 2nd gen Ventures and RSTD bikes have very high gearing in 5th., which makes it all too easy to lug the bike at slower speeds, and you don't really get into the bikes powerband until you get that engine up into higher RPMs. By replacing the rear diff gears, it really gets the bike into the usable powerband. I had John Furbur install the RSMax gears into "my" diff, as I sent him mine, and he replaced the gears, and...WOW...what a difference.

I have a guy in my neighborhood, that is selling a V max for 500.00 bucks. Is the replacement, that good? Pro's and con's? Is the neighbor selling just the rear drive or the whole bike for $500? If the whole bike, you might want to just refurbish the VMax and get your hooligan on. To swap the VMax rear drive, you will need someone to machine the access hole for the speedo pickup. Or you can do as Miles suggested and just have the internals swapped. Overall, I believe you are better off running in 4th gear with the standard rear drive than to spend the money on the VMax. It is all a matter or ratios. However, a VMax for $500? Be still my beating checkbook. RR
Flyinfool Posted April 9, 2013 #5 Posted April 9, 2013 Interesting as it is, many RSV owners prefer the VMax gears and many of the VMax people prefer the RSV gears. You could get the VMax, do the gear swap and then sill have a complete vmax to sell, or play with.

RandyA $500 is a lot of bucks... unless it's for the whole bike?? I just picked up a V-Max final in really nice condition off eBay for $100. That's the place to look....
Guest Posted April 9, 2013 #7 Posted April 9, 2013 Mike, heres the link for the VMAX swap. You ship John your final drive and he replaces the gears with a set of Vmax gears. 300 bucks and your good to go. Unit fits into a medium sized flat rate Priority box for about 11 bucks shipping. I got one for my bike....Had the swap done within 1 week. http://rmsportmax.com/gateway.html But I am confused....I thought you were getting a Wing?

Brake Pad Posted April 9, 2013 Author #9 Posted April 9, 2013 Yes, entire bike for 500.00, the guy said the carbs need working on. I lost out on two great deals on a 2011 wing & a 2013 with 6K on it. I think someone in the damn bike shop, doesn't like me. sold it right out from under me.

Easiest thing to blame it on. Could be.. Old Gas Water in gas Clogged main fuel filter Clogged screen filters in each carb Plugged idle jet. Stripped/out of adjustment idle mixture screws Leaking air box seals Clogged or missing air filter Modified air box Low battery voltage, many causes for this Kill switch intermittent TCI connectors corroded TCI in early stage of death Ignition coils failing Ignition wires failing Spark Plugs That's a few random thoughts of other causes than "The Carbs" It depends on the condition of the VMax to warrant if $500 is fair. Decent looking VMax, get it. 85-89 VMax's are maybe $1500~$2500 range. It goes downhill from there. Low end could be a couple hundred. I have a bike scrapper near me that has old VMax that is fugly, been outside for years, wanted $1500 couple of years ago. He still has it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Gary

bongobobny Posted April 10, 2013 #12 Posted April 10, 2013 Well, to answer your initial question, the swap makes your gear ratios and 5th gear much better!! Makes your acceleration much quicker (But not quite as quick as a 1st gen) and makes 5th an actual usable gear for normal driving! As far as $500 for the entire bike, grab it!!! The motor alone is worth that...

On a Vmax, it's somewhat a step up in Fuel Consumption when you change from stock Wire to 17" radials. I had it on my '99 for a while, i didn't care for the lowered rpm, because it inflicted with the get-go under any other Circumstances. With stock Tires, it makes the Vmax kanda lame ... I have a Vmax final Drive on my '93 VR, like it very much. :whistling:
