bostonlawman2003 Posted April 7, 2013 #1 Posted April 7, 2013 Went to change the oil on my dad's 05 RSV today and as I lay down next to it to reach under for the filter I noticed antifreeze dripping off the frame onto the garage floor. I took the cover off the front right cylinder where it was all wet and found an open hole, that when the motor was running was pouring antifreeze out like a garden hose. I have the identical bike so I took the same cover off and it seems there is a plug of some sort in the hole on my bike, dad referred to it as possibly a freeze plug? I am not the most mechanically inclined person so I haven't a clue what I was looking at. I am going to try to attach a couple pics here, hopefully it will work so you can see what I was looking at and possibly offer some advice. I took the cover off the rear cylinder as well and there is a plug in the hole on that one, but there was a small amount of antifreeze on the base of the cylinder right under the plug. The bike was garaged all winter, I had it running about two weeks ago and everything was fine with it. Any help you can provide to save us a trip to the stealer would be greatly appreciated. In the photo of both cylinders I circled the two holes with purple to pinpoint what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance
etcswjoe Posted April 7, 2013 #2 Posted April 7, 2013 Actually this is a common problem, some folks just put a dime against the plug to hold it in tighter. I would go ahead and replace them while you have the fins off.
Gary N. Posted April 7, 2013 #3 Posted April 7, 2013 It's a common problem. If you still have the plug some guys put a dime over it and replace the cover. To me that's just a quick fix. The plugs are available from Yamaha. Normally just screw an old spark plug in the threaded hole and pull them out. Good time to change the antifreeze if you need too otherwise you will lose a little from each plug when you pull them out. I think there's a how too on here somewhere.
bostonlawman2003 Posted April 7, 2013 Author #4 Posted April 7, 2013 Great news guys, thanks for your help! I'll go order a couple of plugs from Yamaha and get him back on the road!

M61A1MECH Posted April 7, 2013 #6 Posted April 7, 2013 But where is the plug for the front cyclinder? You said the the plug was missing from the hole when you pulled the Fake fin? If the plug was missing when you pulled the fin where is it? Make certian that it is not stuck to the inside of the fake fin. There should be no way for that plug to come completly out of its hole when the fin is properly installed. So I am confused as to how it would be that you found it missing when youpulled the fin? As everyone else has said , a slight weeping from those plugs is very common.
friesman Posted April 8, 2013 #7 Posted April 8, 2013 if someone pulled the fin cover when the bike was running it is possible that the pressure in your cooling system pushed the plug out, as its only the fin cover that holds those rubber plugs in place. Brian
