hvierkoetter Posted April 6, 2013 #1 Posted April 6, 2013 I just purchased an 86 white venture with only 25,000 miles on it. Bike runs great. My issue is that in idle the engine runs too high, about 2000 rpm. And this is not a constant occurance. Sometimes it idles just fine. when I force the handlebar more back, the idle speed tends to go lower. Anybody have any ides?
bongobobny Posted April 6, 2013 #2 Posted April 6, 2013 Hmmm, binding throttle cable? Binding choke cable?? If it were constant, there is an idle adjustment on the carb linkage that looks like a thumb screw, but you say it is an intermittent issue so it can be anything binding up the throttle...
Snaggletooth Posted April 6, 2013 #3 Posted April 6, 2013 Yep, sounds like cable binding and time to get them lubed to.
pmelah Posted April 7, 2013 #4 Posted April 7, 2013 lube the cables that may help a great deal my idle was doing the same thing i sprayed pb blaster down the tubes the cable ran in and what a difference it made
dacheedah Posted April 7, 2013 #5 Posted April 7, 2013 I wouldn'y use pb blaster, use cable glide. If the handlebars are not stock or it has risers check the cable routing, they could be pinched.
frankd Posted April 7, 2013 #6 Posted April 7, 2013 Also, one of the cables may be adjusted too tight. They need just a little free-play.
Squidley Posted April 7, 2013 #7 Posted April 7, 2013 A binding cable is a good assumption and very well may be the culprit. I have also had a bad carb sync keep RPMs up high and be intermittent. I would find someone in your area that has a carbtune or some sort of carb sync tool (if you don't have one) and make sure the carbs are set right....
abusive throttle cranker Posted April 7, 2013 #8 Posted April 7, 2013 In Phoenix eh? If I ever get my hose problem fingered out I'll be using my brandy new Carbtune and could then ride down there. But of course there is the problem of Partzilla messing up all 3 items I ordered- a throttle cable and Progressive springs being 2 of them. Warning: Partzilla's search engine is very poor. The springs I received won't even fit into the fork tubes!
pmelah Posted April 7, 2013 #9 Posted April 7, 2013 pb blaster was all i had i would use cable glide if i had some and had the money to get it but the year is still young and im still in recovery mode for the leg
Black wing Posted April 7, 2013 #10 Posted April 7, 2013 ya i would lube up all the cables and loosen the pull side of the throttle till the idle stays constant where ever the handle bars are.
