One of the big differences between the 1st and 2nd gen bikes, and not discussed very often, is the front fairing mount. The 1st is frame mounted, and the 2nd is fork mounted. Which one is best and why??. :stirthepot::whistling:

My understanding....

Frame mounted fairing :

- less affected by winds turning the front wheel

Fork mounted fairing :

- headlight points in direction you are turning

I like fixed fairing for the rear view mirrors. Almost had a serious accident with the 2nd gen making a turn. Looked over my shoulder as I was turning to find a car passing...

Let's see.... I've had

1974 (I think) Honda 750-4 with fixed fairing

'85 & 87 VR - fixed fairing

'03 Wing - fixed fairing

'06 RSMV - fork mount fairing

(fixed = frame mount)

I found the fork mount to be more susceptible to wind than any of the others. I have yet to experience any steering or control issue related to wind on my Wing.

So, my experience tells me the frame mounted fairing is better.

I never personally have ever owned a frame mounted, have test driven or ridden a friends for short distance but one advantage of frame mounted as I understand it is that it is less tiring over long distances. You don't realize how much work goes into keeping the bike straight from the wind constantly pushing against the forks, one advantage wings have for long distance riding.

I've owned several frame mounted fairing bikes and they are warmer in cold weather.

I can't say I prefer either one over the other in windy conditions.

Like the mirrors on the fixed fairing.

I liked the first gen fairing much better than the 2nd gen. Just seemed to work better all the way around and alot more solid.

Frame mount now and always. Never want a fork mount again.

Wind don't effect the frame mount nearly as much.

I can't compare the 1st and 2nd gen to each other but I've never been more impressed with a fairing for weather protection than the 1st gen.

Keeping the speed up I've got a nice dry bubble to sit in.

BMW has the hot setup for lights on their new 1600. Follows the road. Perfect world.

OK I know this is going to get into the old 1st and 2nd argument but now I can actually

give an honest first hand answer.

First gen fixed fairing is much easier to handle much lighter for steering, yes the draw back is the headlight not turning with you.

If Yamaha made a first gen 20 years newer I would buy it!

If I had any pennies I would say that is my 2 cents worth so you gotta settle for a nickel!

Ya know, if you take a 2nd gen and rip off it's fork mounted fairing and plop on a HD Road Glide fixed fairing, I might go for a 2nd gen...

Then you'd really have a "YamaHarley" :cool10:

Comparing the 89 Venture Royale seemed much easier than the 2011 RSV, I think the 1st gen's front ends seem lighter or is it just the dynamic of you are pushing the added weight when turning? Maybe moving the cassette and class back on the first gen also pushed weight toward the center of the bike.

So I gather the 1stGen's are better bikes..... :) :thumbsup2:

Hey I wouldnt go that far, but there were alot of things I liked about my 87 and there are alot of things I like about my 06. Wouldnt say better, just different.:big-grin-emoticon:

Actually :rotf::cool10::rotf::cool10: neither the frame mounted fairing or the front-end mounted fairing is better...than...riding with NO fairing...while bare-chested...in a hail storm...with a 50 mph crosswind...and a VW microbus full of dope smoking hippies following you...because they need to draft behind you to avoid the hail on their windshield...because their wipers don't work...and the cops are chasing them...up a hill...and the fastest they can go is 40 mph...up that same hill...which is slower than the 50 mph crosswinds...that are pushing then back down the hill...and the cop is slowing as fast as he can...to avoid the VW microbus from being blown back into the cop car...all the while...you are riding the bike with no fairing...with your hairy bare-chest sticking out in the wind...testing your manliness up against the forces of the hail storm...and smiling all the way home.

Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end, we'd sing and dance, forever and a day....

Miles, whatever you been "injesting", I'm not so sure I want any ... :stickpoke: :rotfl:

When I rode my RGU for the first time it felt 200 lbs lighter than the RSV . Night and day difference in the low speed handeling

I have owned both type fairings, I by far prefer the frame mounted.

I learned very early on that no faring is just for people that will never leave town.

HUH? "Very early on" I did coast to coast WITHOUT a fairing. I'm sure there are many others here who did that too early on. If I had a fairing I wouldn't have been hit in the chest by a Mallard at 65 mph just east of Moose Jaw, SK.

So everyone, tell me, how far have you gone without a fairing?

Swifty, do you really want to open that can of worms ?:rotf:
