Wizard765 Posted April 2, 2013 #2 Posted April 2, 2013 Does the speedo work properly. Does it get jittery? If the speedo gearbox needs lube it will make a racket especially when cold.

And if you do not take care of it soon you will be shopping for a replacement. The squealing is a dry bearing in there.
rbig1 Posted April 11, 2013 Author #4 Posted April 11, 2013 well lubed the cable and drive into speedo. did it through the light assy. if meat hooks were much bigger would have to remove the dash. now if it would quit raining. hope noise is gone thanks.

Actually you could have taken the cable out by undoing it at the front hub. The entire cable will pull out of the cover and you can lube away. I had a dash noise/speedo issue on my '83 way back when. It happen on my first long trip to a Venture West in Susanville Ca. and it scared the crap out of me. I fought it for several months and it only did it when it was cold. After riding a bit it would go away. Turned out that the cable end had unscrewed from the back of the speedo. Once it was tightened up the noise disappeared.
rbig1 Posted April 11, 2013 Author #6 Posted April 11, 2013 never thought the cable could make that much noise. thought wheel bearing went out at first. till i touched the dash and felt vibration.
