AngryAmish Posted March 29, 2013 #1 Posted March 29, 2013 Did you install your own hitch or paid to have it installed ? Not sure if I should buy the hitch and swivel ball and install it myself or go to my local Yamaha dealer here in St. Petersburg (Barney's) and pay $475 for hitch, ball and labor ! Thanks (RSV '07)
Rick Haywood Posted March 29, 2013 #2 Posted March 29, 2013 Install it yourself. It is one of the easiest things you can do. It will take you about 30/45 minutes to do it. I am talking on a RSV.
Wizard765 Posted March 29, 2013 #3 Posted March 29, 2013 You can get the hitch from Carbon One on this site and installation is very easy. There is no way I'd give a stealer $475 to do this ...
Gary N. Posted March 29, 2013 #4 Posted March 29, 2013 Built my own and installed it myself for less than $20.
Carbon_One Posted March 29, 2013 #5 Posted March 29, 2013 If using my hitch you remove four 5/16" sized (metrics thou) bolts , pull off the cross bar, insert the hitch, and replace the bolts. It's that simple & probably takes 15-20 minutes at most. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3919&title=rsv26amp-3b-rstd-trailer-hitch&cat=24 Larry
bongobobny Posted March 29, 2013 #6 Posted March 29, 2013 Installed my own. For 1st gen bought one on Fleabay and bolted it up. On 2nd gen bought one from Diamond R, a hide a hitch, and 4 bolts later it was installed. On trike I let Hannigan do it only because I felt lazy...
Condor Posted March 29, 2013 #7 Posted March 29, 2013 Doing the hitch yourself is a piece of cake. It'll take longer to install the trailer pigtail...but not difficult...
Flyinfool Posted March 29, 2013 #8 Posted March 29, 2013 $475 is pretty steep for a hitch. If you don't want to do It I'll bet you could get it done for the cost of a pizza and a few drinks.......
Freebird Posted March 29, 2013 #10 Posted March 29, 2013 I wish you lived closer. I would have you pick up a hitch from Larry and I would install it and the wiring for free. Nothing to it.
AngryAmish Posted March 29, 2013 Author #11 Posted March 29, 2013 $120 from Larry is a great deal. I agree !
AngryAmish Posted March 29, 2013 Author #12 Posted March 29, 2013 $475 is pretty steep for a hitch. .. They quoted me $250 for hitch and ball + 2 hours of labor ($90/hr) ... I found it steep in parts and length of labor time. I asked my brother in Montreal to get a quote, they came back with $500 + tax = $580.00 for the whole thing, parts and labor
AngryAmish Posted March 29, 2013 Author #13 Posted March 29, 2013 Thank you guys, really appreciate your responses and your kindness to help me. I really appreciate it
TheKid Posted March 29, 2013 #14 Posted March 29, 2013 There really is nothing to this project. I built my own, installed, and wire for trailer. It is a simple job. To just install hitch maybe 20 min. To wire the bike and run the wire like you want maybe 45 if take time and know the wires you need to attach to. Buy from Larry and do it yourself or ask around for a close by VR.org member to help. If I was close by I would help.

Rick Haywood Posted March 29, 2013 #16 Posted March 29, 2013 There is a guy on this site that sells a plug and play for the venture for the trailer wiring, For the life of me I can't think of his name. I am sure someone on here will help refresh my memory.

dallio Posted March 29, 2013 #20 Posted March 29, 2013 i built my own and installed it my self not hard at all, course then i never bought a trailer so i never used it. although my yamaha dealer had to remove it to replace my back tire and they would not put it back on due to liability issues is what they told me.
cabreco Posted March 30, 2013 #21 Posted March 30, 2013 Did it myself. Pulled the entire rig from my 1st gen parts bike. I had it in a storage bin for about a year. I did buy a new wiring kit for the lights since my trailer is 2 lights & the bikes have independent turn signals The only change I did was add a swivel ball to the hitch. All things considered, it was a very easy install.
Mike G in SC Posted March 30, 2013 #22 Posted March 30, 2013 (edited) Do the hardware yourself. Just bolts. No jack, no torque, no brainer. And then if you need help on the wiring, maybe Steve K,,, who happens to make the harness on this site, can help. sleepy2 Posted March 31, 2013 #23 Posted March 31, 2013 Same here made my own from small car hitch(cut it down to fit) Made my own wiring patch also since I needed it right away to go to maintenance day last year or I would have bought them from the members on sight. Also dealer wouldn't install because of liability issues . Usually takes 1/2 hour to remove saddle bags, hitch and disconnect harness then put in original spacer so I can take in for dealer service then change back when I get it home. They know I tow a trailer as I showed up a few times with bike I traded in(2000 Road-star) to buy 2012 Venture.
Brake Pad Posted March 31, 2013 #24 Posted March 31, 2013 hitchdoc hitches are hard to put on, I had to have a friend help me, we had to support the trunk by tying it to the rafters, tighten the bolts from left to right, not one side at a time, the fender will look crooked
M61A1MECH Posted March 31, 2013 #25 Posted March 31, 2013 AngryAmish I would be glad to help if you need it, most hitch set ups for the Ventures only require that you remove the spanner section that connects the left and right saddlebag supports and replace it with the hitch, mine is 4 bolts. I do have harnesses available, I would suggest using a isolator for the trailer, that will keep the added electrical off of the bike's harness, if the trailer has LEDs you could do without the isolator. Also if your trailer is wired for a four wire set up you will need a convertor to go from the blke's five wire system to the trailer's four wire system, both the isolator and the convertor can be found at Electrical Connection. http://www.electricalconnection.com/wire-harnesses/hrns-trailer.htm Call me or email me , my contact info is in my profile.
