I was wondering what the part that is propped up is. I have seen the cylinder type part in posts about how to replace fork seals, but what is the flying saucer part and is it necessary? It connects to the very bottom of the inner fork.

It sits inside, dish down, in the lower leg of the fork and the oil lock sits inside of it. Only found on some models.

I've been into 6 sets of MKI forks and never seen them. I've only had three sets opened up from the MKII's and only two had them in. Not saying the one set missing them didn't have them at some point.

 

Probably a MKII thing at best guess.

 

Gary has done a lot of research on the oil flow through the forks and the anti-dive systems so I'm sure he can say exacty what they do and rather or not you could get away with not using them.

 

I got this thing about if it came out, it's going back in. Makes it interesting when you only get one part out of two forks.

PO probably didn't have enough fork oil so he grabbed the first thing he found to displace some oil volume. Was it noisy ? :doh:

haha...I play around with aircooled VW's and some of the things PO's do to them are horiffic!! I guess the same thing goes on with these bikes:)

It didn't fall in there by accident I know that. It was inside the spring. But only on one side. :confused24:

 

I guess he didn't want that side to bottom out anymore. :bang head:

 

What the word everybody uses these days?

I think that part was only on 88 and later forks.

 

I can tell by the drilling in the fork tubes I sectioned to see what was going on inside of them.

 

Yamaha had at least 3 very different designs in the lower fork anti dive area. 83-85, 86-87, and 88-93.

 

I probably have some extras of the part you only have one of.

 

The part on left in the picture in first post is the lock valve & is common to all the designs. The 'flying saucer' is 88-93.

Thanks Gary. I was just curious because I did not see that part on any of the other pics when the forks were tore down. I have both pieces, but I have progressive springs and am trying to get rid of the anti dive units to clean up the forks. I know skydoc usually has the blockoffs, but he currently does not have any.

I have a set of blockoff plates from Skydoc 17, that I can send you. The only problem is they are still on the bike and I won't take them off for a week or so. I am going to put the original valves back on. They came off my 89 VR.
