Sailor Posted March 25, 2013 #26 Posted March 25, 2013 The main problem with insurance in B.C. is that ICBC ( aka ICKYBICKY), the Insurance Company of British Columbia, is owned by the provincial government. It is supposed to be independent but the government raids their funds and adds them to the provincial coffers so even if ICBC makes a profit the rates continue to go up. ICBC also pays the police to put up roadblocks and radar traps so that they can raise individual rates. Extra insurance, damage, theft etc, can be obtained privately. According to Marketplace, a very good consumer affairs show, the reason prices in Canada are so high is that they can afford them and will pay them. They tracked the costs for goods all the way from the store to the manufacturer and found no reason why the prices are so high. It is simple gouging. Everyone along the way said the same thing, Canadians can afford it so we charge them extra.
AngryAmish Posted March 25, 2013 Author #27 Posted March 25, 2013 For cars ... insurance contribution is $128, vehicle registration (tag) is $111, plus a transit contribution of between $30 (people on the island of Montreal pay an additional $45). The $45 is a contribution to the public transit system
Gary N. Posted March 25, 2013 #28 Posted March 25, 2013 Registration for motorcycles PER YEAR !! Mopeds and Scooters (under 50cc) - $273.50 125 cc or less - $243.79 126 cc to 400 cc - $351.25 401 cc and over (cruisers, touring) - $557.53 401 cc and over (sportsbike, racers) - $1,116.90 .............. and they drive 5 months a year or so up there !!! Well, I don't know me, but if that includes insurance, I'm moving to Quebec eh. $557.53 is less than half of what I'm paying in Ontario.
pmelah Posted March 25, 2013 #29 Posted March 25, 2013 my tag was 21 and insurance on the 84 is 180 yr full cov:whistling:
AngryAmish Posted March 25, 2013 Author #30 Posted March 25, 2013 For a SPORT bike over 401cc... the insurance contribution is a flat fee of $1,070 (plus a $4.25 "charge" - probably an admin fee). The tag portion is $42.50. For a cruiser over 401cc the insurance contribution is $557.53 The insurance contribution does NOT cover damage to vehicles so drivers need to have property damage insurance thru an insurance company. I don't know what their rates are for this. The $4.25 is the registration paper
friesman Posted March 25, 2013 #31 Posted March 25, 2013 Well, I don't know me, but if that includes insurance, I'm moving to Quebec eh. $557.53 is less than half of what I'm paying in Ontario. Yeah,.....but you would be living in Quebec........
