JohnT Posted March 24, 2013 #3 Posted March 24, 2013 I'm not sure if the word is couldn't or wouldn't, but the phrase ends in "live there". WTH? And I thought costs in NY were terrible. What, if any, explanation do they give? Is it any where near comparable to auto registration cost?
Miles Posted March 24, 2013 #4 Posted March 24, 2013 (edited) The question I would ask...because I do not know the answer...is: Does the annual registration in Canada also include annual insurance on that same vehicle, for that price ???? I know that some things are done differently in Canada, eh...but not sure about vehicle registration/insurance. Edited March 24, 2013 by Miles
AngryAmish Posted March 24, 2013 Author #5 Posted March 24, 2013 The question I would ask...becasue I do not know the answer...is: Does the annual registration in Canada also include annual insurance on that same vehicle, for that price ???? I know that some things are done differently in Canada, eh...but not sure about vehicle registration/insurance. That includes an "insurance contribution" because Quebec has a no-fault insurance BUT you still need to be insure like everyone else which depending on motorcycle can be around $700/yr
bill in mn Posted March 24, 2013 #8 Posted March 24, 2013 Wow ! I thought Minnesota was the only place where nothing is allowed. Is that for real ? I got a permit back when you just took a written test and you could ride with restrictions. No night ridding , no two up that's was it.(1973) then you had to drive their course in the parking lot.I thought if you made it on the road for 6 months without dieing they should just give you the license.I made a deal with my folks that I would take a safety class and they would co-sign for my new 1974 Yamaha TX 500 royal blue, anything to get a real road bike. I still remember the things that were taught in it . 1. Defend your lane . 2. How easily a bike can be hidden, anything hanging from a mirror the wing window mullein . 3. Stopping distance ,we stop quick 4. the center of the lane is bad news especially wet, oil ,muffler clamps and everything else that falls off . That bike cost less than my house payment today.
Wade 2000 Posted March 24, 2013 #9 Posted March 24, 2013 I wonder if it has anything to do with the risk factor considering the national healthcare system?? Maybe coming to a U.S. registration bill soon:bang head:
AngryAmish Posted March 24, 2013 Author #10 Posted March 24, 2013 LOL , 1974 , the year my dad came home with a Norton ! I was 7 and was elated when I saw it, my mom, no, lol
Howard B Posted March 24, 2013 #11 Posted March 24, 2013 I don't mean to make anyone angry here, but I looked up what my registration fee's were. For my 88 yvr the fee's were $137.00 in Oregon. But that's for two years! My insurance bill is $200.00, for one year.
mbelik Posted March 24, 2013 #12 Posted March 24, 2013 In Australia NSW it's $900 this year with compulsory insurance and its going up to $1200 next year for a 1300cc. We ride all year round here but most of the above cost is the insurance for harm to other people?

We ride all year round here but most of the above cost is the insurance for harm to other people? Blame Queen E ! lol ................ The reason I was told about the 'insurance contribution" in the registration is because in Quebec you cannot sue. So if you are riding a bike and someone blows a red light and hits you, if he is uninsured, then the Dept of Motor Vehicule will pay for your damge and anything else. You cannot sue. Imagine you were allowed to sue and he only had $43.06 in the bank !! For that I understand about the 'insurance contribution" in the registration, but still , total cost is waaaaaaayyyy too high Edited March 24, 2013 by AngryAmish
AngryAmish Posted March 24, 2013 Author #14 Posted March 24, 2013 .................... and jailtime would do you no good if your motorcycle is totalled and you have a broken leg or worse !
RedRider Posted March 24, 2013 #15 Posted March 24, 2013 You guys need to move to Wisconsin. $23 for biennial registration. Another $15 per year ($30 per biennial) for having the plates personalized. RR
cabreco Posted March 24, 2013 #16 Posted March 24, 2013 I understand that is price for the universal healthcare you guys have in Canada. Everything is more expensive up there.
onenut Posted March 24, 2013 #17 Posted March 24, 2013 Wow I am in Pa. and just put my bike on the road for reg. plate and notary fees under $120 and my liability ins. for the year is only around $100 I couldn't even afford to ride in Canada
Freebird Posted March 24, 2013 #18 Posted March 24, 2013 One year registration here in Ohio is $28.87 on my '99. Liability insurance is about $75.00 a year. So....total is 103.87 per year.
darthandy Posted March 24, 2013 #19 Posted March 24, 2013 I understand that is price for the universal healthcare you guys have in Canada. Everything is more expensive up there. I beg your pardon, but that registration fee has nothing whatsoever to do with our healthcare costs. My yearly registration here in Ontario is $42 for each bike. Quebec has always been a very expensive place to do just about anything. They like to protect the consumer, no matter how much it costs him! Andy

They like to protect the consumer, no matter how much it costs him! Andy I have to agree. I believe the major 2 reasons for high costs in Canada is A) Canada does not have the population numbers that the US has, resulting in costs being shared/divided among a smaller number of people. B) Canadians as a whole do not tend to speak out enough as a group against politicians simple using excuses to fatten their paychecks without having to work for it. Prime example is the newly formed Colleges of trades of Ontario, that has taken trades licensing over from the Government in Ontario. Their first step is to increase our trade fees. Instead of paying for our licenses once every three years they are going to charge us the same amount every year. They claim it is to allow the trade to be self regulating the way Doctors and Lawyers are and to improve the trade public image B***S***...The fact is its just another bunch of lazy parasites trying to pull a wage off of the backs of those who actually work for a living. Nor will it do anything to improve the wages of trades people, definitely not matching the doctors or lawyers they use as an example. But you cannot get enough people together in Ontario to put a stop to this cash grab. Edited March 25, 2013 by saddlebum
XV1100SE Posted March 25, 2013 #21 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) Out of curiosity I looked it up... The renewal few includes an "insurance contribution" which covers bodily injury and consequences. Being a "no fault" insurance plan, it compensates victims of accidents for bodily injury sustained whether at fault or not. For a SPORT bike over 401cc... the insurance contribution is a flat fee of $1,070 (plus a $4.25 "charge" - probably an admin fee). The tag portion is $42.50. For a cruiser over 401cc the insurance contribution is $557.53 The insurance contribution does NOT cover damage to vehicles so drivers need to have property damage insurance thru an insurance company. I don't know what their rates are for this. For cars ... insurance contribution is $128, vehicle registration (tag) is $111, plus a transit contribution of between $30 (people on the island of Montreal pay an additional $45).... plus whatever you pay your insurance company for property damage/collision. Edited March 25, 2013 by XV1100SE updated pricing for sport and cruiser

Stanman Posted March 25, 2013 #23 Posted March 25, 2013 My registration & insurance (provincial Government insurance) is in the neighborhood of $860/year. Don't know if its true or not ,but I just heard the province is considering putting the rates for motorcycles up 75%, and was told they did go up 25%. If the 75% increase is implemented it would then cost over $1500/ year. if this happens the bike is gone, I'm not paying those rates for 5 months riding. To add to this I've been told that does not cover having the bike stolen.

My 85 registration and insurance was slated to jumo to over 1900 yearly. it does include all collision, theft, liability and medical with a 500 deductible, but its outrageous! I am working with a local group called www.saskrage.org to get the proposed increase reversed. Some of the SPorts bike categories jumped from an already outrageous rate of around 1900 yrly to a new unbelievable rate of over 5400 bucks yearly! Bikers are just outraged here! Brian
XV1100SE Posted March 25, 2013 #25 Posted March 25, 2013 This discussion is making me feel a lot better about what we pay in Ontario.
