Engr GM Posted March 24, 2013 #1 Posted March 24, 2013 (edited) Hello to all on the forum. Bought a used `08 venture 1300, runs well, but (there's always a but) am getting a lot of noise coming up from the engine of a "rattling" like nature. bike has just under 20 k mile on it, everything else is good. Read the owner's manual, noted valve adjustment is not due `till 26k on the odo. Even wife made comment this rattle sound was above what could be considered normal. Are these motors mechanically noisier than other bikes? Fwiw, it is not drive train noise that she and I are hearing. Looking of some collected wisdom here. Thanks to all who offer up some thoughts on this thread. Gary, aka Engr GM Edited March 24, 2013 by Engr GM spelling error
jfoster Posted March 24, 2013 #2 Posted March 24, 2013 Just for reference point, what were you riding before the RSV?
SilvrT Posted March 24, 2013 #3 Posted March 24, 2013 Are these motors mechanically noisier than other bikes? I always thought mine was. I've had an '85 and an '87 and neither seemed as noisy as my '06 did. Was told it's just how they sound. However, without us actually hearing yours, it's hard to give an accurate answer. Any possibility you could post some sound files or vids with sound??
Engr GM Posted March 24, 2013 Author #4 Posted March 24, 2013 Have had several bikes, Suzuki GS1000, wing, Valkyrie, latest was `08 Nomad. The engine on this bike's 'rattling" noise is louder than other's I have ridden. Gary
Engr GM Posted March 24, 2013 Author #5 Posted March 24, 2013 The `80 GS 1000 made noises as it grew older, but that was due to crankshaft rocking on the mating splines where it was pressed together. It was a full circle roller engine. Is the RSV motor of the same design or is it a insert bearing design? Just some wandering curious thoughts. Gary
XV1100SE Posted March 24, 2013 #6 Posted March 24, 2013 As for trouble shooting... keep in mind that the windscreen reflects lot of sound from the back end of the bike. If you can provide some details... 1) does it "rattle" when idling or when riding or both? 2) have you checked to make sure all bolts are tight? Check any safety chrome that has been added 3) if you are positive the sound is coming from the engine it would be good to identify if it is top or bottom end. If the sound only happens when the bike is moving I'd suspect the lower end of the motor (clutch?) or something to do with the drive shaft (if rear tire was replaced it is possible something wasn't done right) I have an '09 and only rattling that goes on while I'm riding is me !
mbelik Posted March 24, 2013 #7 Posted March 24, 2013 I thought I had a noisy engine but in the end I checked all the bolts and it was the front break caliper. One of the bolts was loose but it sounded like it was coming from the engine. I tightened all the bolts and the noise went away.
dacheedah Posted March 24, 2013 #9 Posted March 24, 2013 Whine, yes in certain ranges Rattle, nope. . . try going around and check for loosened allen bolts . . . An inchpound torque wrench with metric allens is an awesome investment. Check all fluid levels, not a bad time to perform your pm's
frankd Posted March 25, 2013 #10 Posted March 25, 2013 Also, sync. the carbs. A lot more noises are heard when you have 1 weak cylinder.
MikeWa Posted March 25, 2013 #11 Posted March 25, 2013 08 Can you say warranty? Depending on when it first entered service there may still be some warranty left. I would have a Yamaha dealer check out the noise. If it is something abnormal he can fix it under warranty. Mike
friesman Posted March 25, 2013 #12 Posted March 25, 2013 is it noisy while on the sidestand and while upright? Idling with the clutch in or out? while riding or idling? Might help us pin it down. Mine was rattling while on side stand, but quit when I pulled in the clutch handle. Brian
etcswjoe Posted March 25, 2013 #13 Posted March 25, 2013 Both RSV's I have are make alot of racket compared to other models, if you can make a recording of the noise and post it. You may also want to get up with someone else to see if theirs is making the same noise.
djh3 Posted March 25, 2013 #14 Posted March 25, 2013 Mine "seems" noiser than the v-twin 900 Vulcan I had. To me sound like top end noise, I'm thinking valve train. Especially when first started up, sya first five minutes or so. then I guess its got enough oil it quites up. A long screw driver or engine stethascope would maybe help narrow it down. No rockers so you dont have those banging around. My 900 Vulcan I got an odd rattle at like certian speed/rpm range. Turned out it was an exhaust heat shield. Lock tite and good to go.
