MasterGuns Posted March 23, 2013 #1 Posted March 23, 2013 Are all lst Gens cold-blooded? Mine, and the last three lst Gens had, are/were very cold blooded when first started cold. The lst Gen I have now runs like a new bike once it warms up a bit, but pops and cracks sputters and displays an overall bad grouchy attitude when first starting it. If it is already warm, even so little that I can hold onto all four exhaust pipes, she starts up and immediately runs like a champ. When cold, reminds me of my wife. Oops; glad she does read this site. But seriously, are they all like this or is there something off, needing adjustment, replaced or what?
Eck Posted March 23, 2013 #2 Posted March 23, 2013 Guess that discribes me...I'm a 1st gen...cold blooded...
muffinman Posted March 23, 2013 #3 Posted March 23, 2013 It sounds like you need a good carb adjustment my blonde fires to right up all the way down to 14 degrees Jeff
Power Trippin Posted March 23, 2013 #4 Posted March 23, 2013 It sounds like you need a good carb adjustment my blonde fires to right up all the way down to 14 degrees Jeff I agree with Jeff. My 83 starts up and idles great no matter what the temp. Time to adjust &/or clean the carbs. I think a couple people might even recommend the mechanic in a bottle, i.e.; Seafoam! Just for starters, of course.
rstacy Posted March 23, 2013 #5 Posted March 23, 2013 I have an 89 that requires the choke to stay on for about a mile. Oddly enough this same bike has a little stumble off of idle even when hot. I have done plugs and run about a gallon of sea foam through it but no change. (I knew that stuff didn't work as a problem solver! ) Now my 86 is a very different animal. A little choke and it fires right up. 30 seconds later you can get rid of the choke and it is good to go.
Flyinfool Posted March 23, 2013 #6 Posted March 23, 2013 Since you are from TX you must define cold. Some southerners think that 50 is frigid.... My 88 starts just fine down to 0*F (never tried it colder cuz then I don't start). When it is that cold It needs about half choke for the first mile. Warmer weather I can take off the choke as soon as I get moving.
Evan Posted March 23, 2013 #7 Posted March 23, 2013 My 88 also starts good in colder weather and dosen't take much choke before it smooths out.
MasterGuns Posted March 23, 2013 Author #8 Posted March 23, 2013 Mine fires right up instantly. Never said that was the issue. I just returned from the garage but this time, after all these years, didn't use any choke even though it is in the forties and she is cold. Fired right up, no popping or snarling. Guess I really don't need the choke. All is good. Nothing more needed. These are really wonderful bikes; just wish it could be a fast as my FJR13.
dacheedah Posted March 24, 2013 #9 Posted March 24, 2013 My first gen and my new bike always fired right up, with the choke on, for about 30-60 sec run time and then ride on.
Venturous Randy Posted March 24, 2013 #10 Posted March 24, 2013 The lst Gen I have now runs like a new bike once it warms up a bit, but pops and cracks sputters and displays an overall bad grouchy attitude when first starting it. Someone asked me the other day if I wake up grouchy. I told them that sometimes I just let her sleep. RandyA

Squidley Posted March 24, 2013 #12 Posted March 24, 2013 I have had to choke EVER Venture I owned, 1st or 2nd gen, matter of fact every Yamaha I have owned. Some more than others, but all needed choke regardless....
Condor Posted March 25, 2013 #13 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) If it's taking a long time to warm up take a look at your drain valve setting. It may be on and needs to be set to off. On by-passes the thermostat. And of course you knew that... Sorry Herb.. Edited March 27, 2013 by Condor
GeorgeS Posted March 27, 2013 #14 Posted March 27, 2013 I would start bye draining all 4 carb bowls. Then completly Drain the Fuel tank, make sure you get it all out. Replace fuel and add, Sea Foam. Then Replace the Plugs, if they are " Overdue " Then do a Carb Sync , I suspect your Throttle cables are out of adjustment, read the manual on how to set up the cables. Then do a Carb Sync, You Might, be in need of a new set of Carb Diaphrams, if all of the above does not help .
Trader Posted March 27, 2013 #15 Posted March 27, 2013 Someone asked me the other day if I wake up grouchy. I told them that sometimes I just let her sleep. RandyA My wife says she wakes up every day with a jerk.
