1BigDog Posted March 20, 2013 #1 Posted March 20, 2013 So, I plan on going ahead with my valve adjustment while I have (or will soon have) the carbs off. I read of some kit and tool being loaned at some point. Anyone know where to seek this kit and what are the rules for it?
Freebird Posted March 20, 2013 #2 Posted March 20, 2013 Ruffy, I know that Skydoc has one that he loans out if you buy the valve cover gaskets from him. You might want to check with him to see where it is and when it might be available.
Guest Posted March 20, 2013 #3 Posted March 20, 2013 Thanks.....does an assistant come with the kit too????
Dragonslayer Posted March 20, 2013 #4 Posted March 20, 2013 RandyR may be up for a free Florida vacation
etcswjoe Posted March 20, 2013 #5 Posted March 20, 2013 I used Skydocs kit and bought the gaskets from him to do both my bikes and it worked out real well.
muffinman Posted March 20, 2013 #6 Posted March 20, 2013 Jeff. Give me a call on my cell I might be able to help you . Jeff
ToyOdie Posted March 20, 2013 #7 Posted March 20, 2013 Ruffy, I never did get to do my valves after we spoke last. I'm still looking to do them. Let me know when you get the kit and tool. I would like to learn along with you. My bike is down right now for the shift shaft pins. I almost had to ride back from Daytona in 3rd gear. I'm waiting for the parts so I can get it up and running. I should have them next week.
RandyR Posted March 21, 2013 #8 Posted March 21, 2013 Ruffy, If it was a day trip, I'd be glad to help out. Let me know if you want my kit? Randy
RandyR Posted March 23, 2013 #10 Posted March 23, 2013 wasn't paying attention. send me your postal address and the kit will go out asap
Gray Ghost Posted March 27, 2013 #11 Posted March 27, 2013 Ruffy, I am in Kissimmee. I can assist if you get the kit. I have one of the J tools, but no shims or gaskets. I am not on the forum every day so email or phone is the best way to reach me.
Guest Posted March 27, 2013 #12 Posted March 27, 2013 Spoke to Randy tonight. The kit will be on the way shortly and the gaskets are ordered and should be here in the next week or so. ToyOdie, feel free to drop in once I get ready to do the adjustment. Ill let you know when im ready. Thanks for the offer Cliff. Ill keep that in mind if I have any problems. Your still several hours away. I would hate to have you come this far but I do appreciate the option if I get stuck.
ToyOdie Posted March 29, 2013 #13 Posted March 29, 2013 Thanks Ruffy. Im going to try to get my gaskets so I can do mine after your done. We can work out sending the kit back when we're done. Let me know when your ready so I can see how it's done.
Guest Posted March 30, 2013 #14 Posted March 30, 2013 Randy, got the kit the other day......Thanks! Gaskets should be here this week and will work on it next week.
Guest Posted April 3, 2013 #15 Posted April 3, 2013 Gasket set arrived yesterday. ToyOdie, let me know what days off you have next week. I should have the carbs and covers off by next Monday.
Yammer Dan Posted April 3, 2013 #16 Posted April 3, 2013 How many shims in a 1st Gen? Thinking of buying set of buckets just to get shims. Would that make a good starter set. Maybe we could have another to pass around?
robclark63 Posted April 3, 2013 #17 Posted April 3, 2013 16...4 per cylinder. Not sure if that would give you the selection you would need, you would probably end up with a lot of shims that were needed to set the valves when the bike was new and be lacking in the shims you need. What I did was took some shims of the same size to my local shop and traded for some I needed. If you had a bunch of shims you might be able to do that to get a kit started, but you would need a lot of shims!! Just my 2 cents.
ToyOdie Posted April 3, 2013 #18 Posted April 3, 2013 Ruffy I'm scheduled off on Monday and Friday next week. I should be able to swap days if I need too. Let me know what day you want and I'll work it out. We can open the carbs and get the jets clean while you have them off. I should have a micrometer to bring over to mic the shims. Let me know if we need anything else I might have. Call me when you know what day.
RandyR Posted April 3, 2013 #19 Posted April 3, 2013 (edited) I bought a couple sets of shims from tear-down engines to add to the K&L kit I originally had. The clearances tighten up over time (in general) which means that shims smaller than 2.70mm are the ones most needed on our bikes, even when one can swap around sizes, so I ask people using my kit to replace those. sometimes used ones are available on ebay. Luckily the 25mm diameter shims are used in lots of different motorcycle and even automobile engines. Edited April 3, 2013 by RandyR
