KeithR Posted March 18, 2013 #1 Posted March 18, 2013 I just visited a Yamaha dealer an hrs drive away where I planned to bring my bike come spring to get my valves adjusted. I was talking to the parts/service guy and he said that they have done quite a few and have never had to replace shims. I was asking if they had a kit or would have to order shims as required......don't have a kit. The tech is a Yamaha trained guy with 15 yrs experience but I didn't get to talk to him. Should I run ? Keith
Yammer Dan Posted March 18, 2013 #2 Posted March 18, 2013 That is possible if all he has done is a few newer bikes with low miles. You didn't say how many miles you had. If he has to order shims how long is your ride going to sit waiting? I think I would try to check somewhere else if possible.
KeithR Posted March 18, 2013 Author #3 Posted March 18, 2013 I have 36000 miles and have a top gasket leaking so gonna do it same time. could sit for a week. Keith
RSTDdog Posted March 18, 2013 #4 Posted March 18, 2013 If none of them are out then obviously you don't need shims. If you go through and check all the valve clearances first and say you have three or four that are out of spec, sometimes you can swap the locations of the shims around (if you are lucky). Requires a bit more work since you need to remove the shims on all the ones that are out, calculate what you need and measure what you have to figure out if that will work. Can't imagine a dealer not having the shim kit though.
djh3 Posted March 18, 2013 #5 Posted March 18, 2013 Cant check them when hot either if memory serves correct. So bike will have to sit for hours to cool off if your riding it there.
Brake Pad Posted March 19, 2013 #6 Posted March 19, 2013 waiting for the gaskets for mine, having the same thing done. so far 7 days on Gaskets
RedRider Posted March 19, 2013 #7 Posted March 19, 2013 If your Yama dealer doesn't have a shim kit - run, don't walk, to the next dealer. That would be like not having a 27mm wrench to remove the rear wheel. Nuts. RR
Marcarl Posted March 19, 2013 #8 Posted March 19, 2013 If your Yama dealer doesn't have a shim kit - run, don't walk, to the next dealer. That would be like not having a 27mm wrench to remove the rear wheel. Nuts. RR I wouldn't be running, I'd be riding a first gen!!!!! and I'd being doing 90 before I could get it out of 1st gear.
Yammer Dan Posted March 19, 2013 #9 Posted March 19, 2013 I wouldn't be running, I'd be riding a first gen!!!!! and I'd being doing 90 before I could get it out of 1st gear. Now Carl I don't think you can get over 80 in 1st.....
KeithR Posted March 19, 2013 Author #10 Posted March 19, 2013 waiting for the gaskets for mine, having the same thing done. so far 7 days on Gaskets Do you have the nbrs for the gaskets so I can be prepared Tks Keith
MiCarl Posted March 19, 2013 #11 Posted March 19, 2013 Now Carl I don't think you can get over 80 in 1st..... KMs Dan, not miles.
Marcarl Posted March 19, 2013 #12 Posted March 19, 2013 KMs Dan, not miles. I just knew I'd get somebody confused on that one,,, didn't think it would be Dan though, I thought it would have been some young feller.
Yammer Dan Posted March 19, 2013 #13 Posted March 19, 2013 I just knew I'd get somebody confused on that one,,, didn't think it would be Dan though, I thought it would have been some young feller. :rotfl::rotfl: Hey I stay confused lately!!
BradT Posted March 20, 2013 #14 Posted March 20, 2013 I'd being doing 90 before I could get it out of 1st gear. Now Carl I don't think you can get over 80 in 1st. :rotf:He was thinking 90 kph, 55 mph. Even that is probably like a E-Fishin-C story Brad
V7Goose Posted March 20, 2013 #15 Posted March 20, 2013 I cannot say if that mechanic is knowledgeable or truthful, but I CAN tell you of my own experiences: I have done valve checks on MANY 2nd gen bikes, including engines right at the recommended mile check and others that had gone many many miles past, and not one single engine did not need at least one shim changed. Few were real bad, but still out of spec. I wouldn't be surprised to see an engine here or there that all checked good, but if someone started saying that none of them ever needed shims, I'd look to a different shop. My recommendation is to get them checked on time, and make sure you absolutely trust the mechanic. Best is to find someone to help you do it yourself - you will learn a lot and have total peace of mind about it when the job is done. Goose
skydoc_17 Posted March 20, 2013 #16 Posted March 20, 2013 I have personally found that what is considered "close enough" by the average dealer, IS NOT close enough for my tastes! My Shim Kit is currently here at the moment, and I am willing to send it to anyone that is interested in trying to do this very important maintenance them selves. The kit comes with the bucket compression tool, a copy of the written instructions from the Yamaha Service Manual, a feeler gage set, a few picks to remove the shims, and 75+/- assorted bucket shims, PLUS a brand new set of Genuine Yamaha Valve Cover Gaskets! The loan of the kit is FREE, you will pay for the gasket set, and the shipping both ways. Feel free to PM me if anyone is interested. Earl
Marcarl Posted March 20, 2013 #17 Posted March 20, 2013 :rotf:He was thinking 90 kph, 55 mph. Even that is probably like a E-Fishin-C story Brad Somebody has to cover for 'im!
