Barrycuda Posted March 17, 2013 #1 Posted March 17, 2013 Hi again... I tried to find the thread in regards to how to properly measure the windshield. That said, if anyone can send me the link to the thread or be so kind to add here. I have what I would consider a tall windshield, I have to see through it. A member is selling an OEM 12 inch and interested in seeing how it would look, along with getting the correct measurements of my current one. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks Barr
Yammer Dan Posted March 17, 2013 #2 Posted March 17, 2013 WITH A RULE??? I think they are measured straight up from the center for the height. Don't forget a 12 inch would be completely different ride with all the wind hitting you. I find my 750 Max and my Venture to be completely different rides. 750 has no sheild but likes backroads and twisties and Venture just likes to GO!!!

I feel honored that Dan would take the time to razz me a bit. thanks Dan..... Yes, there would be a bit difference, I want to be able to see over the shield. May take the nestea plunge and try cutting it. If it works great, if not, it'll force me to get another one....

You are Welcome Sir!!! I think the cutting instrutions are on here somewhere. I've read them and don't seem hard just take your time as anything else. Good luck with it.
Phoneman1981 Posted March 17, 2013 #5 Posted March 17, 2013 Hello: If I remember correctly the windshield height is figured by mearsuring from the top of the windshield cut out that goes over the headlight. I only have experince with with an RSTD windshield. 17.5 inches was a good height for me at 5'7" tall. I ended up cutting my stock shield down. I too like looking over my windshield. But be careful, the more you cut off the more wind your passenger gets. I think I remember a trick, put something small on the ground 50' in front of your bike, look through the windshield and put a piece of tape on the windshield where you see item. Hope this helps. Are you close to any other RSV owners that might have custom shields?
djh3 Posted March 17, 2013 #6 Posted March 17, 2013 From what I remember Barry you take the chrome trim off the front (2 screws on the backside sort of forward of the grips) Then carfully lift sort of towards the seat and up. There are flimsy plastic tabs with pressure "keepers" that hold it in. then the windshield has a square cut section in the center. Mesure from the cut to top of the windshield. I was looking ar a clearview I think it was a fellow had for sale in the 12" variety. I measured up the 12" and used a piece of masking tape to figure out where it would be. For me too short. I think I figured I'd like about 15" or so. If you need a little more discription on the trim removal search out splitting the faring.
ragtop69gs Posted March 17, 2013 #7 Posted March 17, 2013 I have also seen them measured from the top edge of the shield straight down vertically to the top of the tank. The way they are measured varies by manufacturer.
djh3 Posted March 17, 2013 #8 Posted March 17, 2013 Barry if I'm not mistaken you can measure from the bottom of the chrome strip and it will pretty cloase. I think a stock OEM is listed @ 19". Mine measures 19.5 so you can subtract a half inch and should be pretty dang close.
Barrycuda Posted March 17, 2013 Author #9 Posted March 17, 2013 Thanks djh3 , phoneman1981, and the rest of the crew for replying. I will try the 50' test and see. I believe 12 inches is too short and looking between 15-17 inches. I also see on my Vulcan, the top of that shield is about at my lips level. Will see what happens .... Thanks gang!

XV1100SE Posted March 18, 2013 #11 Posted March 18, 2013 On the Clearview site it says : "GT X-Large 22" H 27" W Stock Height Measurement Location: Height is measured vertically from the dip just in front of the gas cap to the top edge of the shield." F4 says that their 17.5" h is the same height as stock. Yamaha says "Height is measured from top of headlight cut-out to top of windshield." From parts diagram of RSV - stock windscreen is 4XY-2837U-01. Doesn't give dimensions of the part though.
awsmsrv Posted March 18, 2013 #12 Posted March 18, 2013 "Height is measured from top of headlight cut-out to top of windshield." And where would that be on the Venture?
djh3 Posted March 18, 2013 #13 Posted March 18, 2013 From that there notch in the center. BTW that was a 9" CE Bailey.
djh3 Posted June 18, 2013 #14 Posted June 18, 2013 Messed around some today in garage. With all the hot weather we have ahd and I'm sure more on the way I have been thinking about a shorter shield. I used a piece of masking tape and figured about how tall I wanted it from the cut out. 13.5" was what I cam up with. Well I have an old windshield off a 900 Vulcan it was a memphis shades Phat. I left the tape on it and took windshield out. Layed flat on a towel and layed the donar windshield inside. Traced out the edges and cut it out with a dremel tool. Set it down in the windshiled slot sn marked holes and drilled. It wasnt quite wide enough so to keep from maybe craking the faring on the ends I cut out a couple of edge pieces to fill the gap. I took it for a spin and I think I'm getting more air flow for sure. but also I think more buffeting. Not sure I want that on a long trip like I have planned. I may put the OEM back in for the trip. But for a few weeks I'm going to try this one out. No cost so if I dont like it no biggie.
sendaro_99 Posted June 20, 2013 #15 Posted June 20, 2013 I was always taught to sit on your bike in a comfortable position such as you would use on a long ride and look out like you normally do for riding while having someone mark your windshield 1 3/4" below the center of your eyes. That's how did mine and used a table belt Sander to remove the excess and reshape the windshield. Much better for me but have not rode a passenger since the mod. Good luck:080402gudl_prv:
stickhandle2 Posted June 20, 2013 #16 Posted June 20, 2013 I feel honored that Dan would take the time to razz me a bit. thanks Dan..... Yes, there would be a bit difference, I want to be able to see over the shield. May take the nestea plunge and try cutting it. If it works great, if not, it'll force me to get another one.... My 2 cents, but I ride a 86 Venture, I had an aftermarket windshield on mine (don't know the brand but it is a bit wider at the base then the OEM windshield) it was 24" tall from the bottom up the middle. I couldn't see properly through the top part of the windshield and when it rained forget it, I was gonna order a new one through a company called CEE Baileys, they had different sizes my preference was to go with an 18" shield so I could see over the top easily. Instead I had mine cut down 5 1/2 " by a local plastics shop, they did a great job on it hasnice smooth edges, it looks great. Yes I now get some wind in my face but I am ok with that as it is not alot, the biggest difference is my wife gets more now around her shoulders when she comes along for a ride. In total it cost me around 50.00 but I think it was money well spent, even in the rain I can now see, so I have to turn the radio up a bit louder because of the added wind noise. Mike.
crazygaucho Posted December 24, 2013 #17 Posted December 24, 2013 that is the question ......... my o5 RSTD is the first bike I have with a windshield (aging?) I love the "silence cone" you get but, I'm a kinda short guy (5'7") and have to look through the windshield and it gets kind of scary when it rains and, don't like the glare at night. to the guys that have the windshield shorter what is your experience? are you happy with it? I know I will gain in visibility but, afraid to lose the comfort I have now with too much wind buffeting. don't care much about passenger comfort since I ride solo 99.9% of times thank you all and have a merry Christmas
Phoneman1981 Posted December 24, 2013 #18 Posted December 24, 2013 Welcome to the club!!! I too am 5'7". I never liked looking through the windshield for the same reasons. I eventually cut my stock windshield down myself. (Great directions here on the VR site). 17 1/2" from the top of the cut out was just right for me. I could look over it but still crouch behind it if I wanted to do so. After lowing my RSTD in the rear this season, I realized it changed my angle of sight and now the cut down version is now in my line of vision. I have since went back to a taller windshield. Trying to get used to it. My wife really likes the taller shield. Hard to please everyone.
farm1810 Posted December 24, 2013 #19 Posted December 24, 2013 I am 5' 11". I was told that the stock RSTD shield measures 19.5". I do not know from where. I did not like always looking through the windshield, so I measured and marked a point 50' in front of the bike on level surface then sat the the bike in as close to normal posture as I could, then marked where on the windshield I was siting through. This was 2" below the top. On the Clearview site there is a 17.5" windshield. I splurged for the vent and for added curve at the top that is supposed to kick the air above the passengers head. The vent offers virtually no difference that I can notice and has the downside of not allowing a set of pouches attached, unless one covers the vent. Of course, it does nothing so I guess that doesn't matter. According to my wife, she can feel no difference in wind from this shield and the original from a wind perspective. Is it his reverse curl? I'm not sure as I have no way to compare. If I was to do it again, I would get the 17.5" shield with reverse curl, but not the vent. Hope this is helpful. R.
djh3 Posted December 24, 2013 #20 Posted December 24, 2013 Windshield like the TD has are usually mesured from the top of the headlight hole. At least thats the way Memphis shades told me when I ordered the one for my Kawasaki. Before ordering a new one you need to know if its a Yamaha, Memphis shades, National Cycle etc. I'm sure they are are special to thier mount and where holes are etc. It can be cut off if your handy and careful. Gaucho if your comming up Fri we can talk a bit about it.
