nascar0699 Posted February 7, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2008 Have a 1984 royal that has all of a sudden developed a noise that I can not find, When you put into gear and give any throttle heare a ratcheting sound , first i thought it was the splines on the inner clutch hub , tore down and is ok, sounded like it was there , does it in all gears, any ideas would be greatley appreciated. SilvrT Posted February 7, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 7, 2008 It very well could be the splines at the differential end of the driveshaft. Not the driveshaft itself but the splined sleeve whatchamacallit the driveshaft goes into. Called the "coupling gear" Part #10 in the pic
Venturous Randy Posted February 7, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 7, 2008 Does the bike still pull ok and go thru the gears? RandyA
Neil86 Posted February 7, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 7, 2008 Best guess would be the driveshaft splines have worn out, and are skipping.
GeorgeS Posted February 7, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 7, 2008 Start watching E-Bay for a new pumpkin, and maby drive shaft assembly. How many miles on this bike ? Is this noise just noticiable at, say, 40 mph. Or is it really loud ?? If the latter, I think I would pull the pumpkin and drive shaft now, and see what you find. Instead of waiting for the next tire change.

I saw something had split in half. It woild astill move but barely. There is a part called the driven cam. I had to split the crank case to repair. Venturous Randy Posted February 11, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 11, 2008 I suspect it is the driveshaft and collar on the diffrential. It may not have ever been greased. RandyA
