Bubber Posted March 9, 2013 #1 Posted March 9, 2013 (edited) Just an FYI my buddy sent me article on penetrating oil. it turns out that ATF and acetone are the best combination. Mix 50% to 50% and it is good. If you have no acetone lacquer thinner is a good substitute. Hope this helps someone somewhere. Bubber Found the article and posted below Penetrating Oils Machinist's Workshop magazine recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts. They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment. *Penetrating oils ........... Average torque load to loosen* No Oil used ................... 516 pounds WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds Liquid Wrench ...............127 pounds Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds ATF*-Acetone mix............53 pounds The ATF-Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50-50 mix. *ATF=Automatic Transmission Fluid Edited March 9, 2013 by Bubber found article
Flyinfool Posted March 9, 2013 #2 Posted March 9, 2013 :sign yeah that: I do remember reading that one somewhere. It is as good as any of the commercial penetrating oils. So are you saying that your mind is really deep??? Like a bottomless pit?? once something goes in it never comes out???
Bubber Posted March 9, 2013 Author #3 Posted March 9, 2013 Not so much deep, but it goes in and may never find it's way back out or see the light of day. What were we talking about again?????

Aussie Annie Posted March 10, 2013 #10 Posted March 10, 2013 I Did! Tuckered me right out, having a thought that is. What? Why?
Squidley Posted March 10, 2013 #11 Posted March 10, 2013 Interesting, if you dont want to mix anything, just use the Kroil. I used that when I worked for Detroit Edison and can tell you it is awesome stuff!
Bubber Posted March 10, 2013 Author #12 Posted March 10, 2013 How will the acetone react to ABS plastic ? I wouldn't recommend it on ABS. Just a thought. Oh no there I go again!
