Prairiehammer Posted March 4, 2013 #26 Posted March 4, 2013 (edited) Drat, My old puter can not open a file that new. Here, JEFF. I scanned my paper worksheet for you Luddites out there. Edited March 4, 2013 by Prairiehammer
Prairiehammer Posted March 4, 2013 #27 Posted March 4, 2013 (edited) Jeff, here is another pdf of the Excel spreadsheet in a LARGE format. Can you see it NOW? Edited March 4, 2013 by Prairiehammer
Jayceesfolly Posted March 4, 2013 #28 Posted March 4, 2013 If I remember right someone posted, in the past, that when the 2nd gear problem was fixed by the dealer, they prick punched a dot next to the serial number on the engine or gearcase. Maybe on the right side behind the oil filler cap?? Not exactly sure of the location of the serial number, the old dementia is kicking in and CRS! Jim
iowawarrior Posted March 4, 2013 #29 Posted March 4, 2013 (edited) If you really want to know and the present owner agrees, all it takes is to remove the middle gear cover and take a look,,, it'll be right there staring at ya. See red arrows. Only have to remove small side cover and six allen head cap screws. that's a good idea. it looks like i'll need a gasket to put it back together, yes? not to sound dumb, but i see the washer/clip in the pic, how will it be different if it has not been repaired? i need to go to the earlier post and compare the posted pics. and i'll check for the punch mark. i appreciate all the responses. i know this has been discussed for the last 28 years and here i am looking for info. duh. i see it now. the old clip has a bevel to it or that's the result of it wearing down. either way, i don't want to see that groove. The grooving will be on the inner surface of the clip, not the exposed outer edge. You may be able to see grooving at split line. Gary

Gary Correct,,, wow Gary, we agree,,, does that mean I'm getting good or what???? I would like to clarify though, you said on the inner surface, yes, but facing out so that it can be seen at the split. About the gasket,, don't worry about it just yet. If it needs doing you'll need it anyways, if it doesn't it's a cheap price to pay for peace of mind, and if you buy and want to ride it home, it shouldn't leak that bad that you can't keep up with it. Just don't loose any pieces so that at least you can put it all back to at least half decent shape. You never know, there a small chance it might pop off in one piece.

On the gasket, I would think he should have one in hand when he pulls cover off for inspection prior to buying it. If it was mine & I was selling it, a stipulation of allowing the cover to be pulled would be a new gasket goes back in if you don't buy it. Gary
Trader Posted March 5, 2013 #33 Posted March 5, 2013 the 2nd gear problem does not make the bike junk. a lot of guys have still happily ridden many thousands of miles by just "ignore" 2nd gear by shifting from 1st to 3rd. These V4 have enough torque that it is hardly missed unless you are the type to want to "get it on" all the time.
Condor Posted March 5, 2013 #34 Posted March 5, 2013 Does anyone have, or is it here on the forum someplace, the number of 1st gens built for each year...'83 thru '93 ???? I would like to know just how many '86 Ventures were made, etc. Also...can someone enlighten me as to the second gear issue that some of the 1st gens had...and was it specific to a particular year or two ??? How did this thread turn into a primer on the rebuild [ad nausium] of the evil second gear issue of the '83-'85.5's???? Actually I'd like to see a registry of all years listing partial vin#'s starting with the letter/owner and state. That would give a pretty good idea of the number of V's built per year....
Prairiehammer Posted March 5, 2013 #35 Posted March 5, 2013 One way we could start finding out production numbers of the Ventures is to post our serial #'s. That would then allow us to get a minimum production run by taking the highest # and subtracting 100 from it. Serial #'s aren't a huge risk to publish in my opinion. You can walk up to almost any vehicle and read the serial number from it. Gary How can an unscrupulous person use a known VIN to cause trouble for the owner?
dingy Posted March 5, 2013 #36 Posted March 5, 2013 How can an unscrupulous person use a known VIN to cause trouble for the owner? Any modern car has the vehicle ID # visible through the lower windshield on drivers side as far as I know. Gary
Flyinfool Posted March 5, 2013 #37 Posted March 5, 2013 If someone has a VIN and a name and/or address and/or phone number, there are problems that they can cause if they really want to go through the effort.
